Helen Zille: There's nothing in our law, Constitution that gives people the right not to be offended

Helen Zille recently spoke to Biznews founder Alec Hogg about her book #Stay woke: Go broke.  Zille writes about the unique dangers of wokeness and cancel culture in South Africa, her battle with cancel culture and what she sees in the country’s political future. In unapologetic terms, Zille unpacks South Africa’s immense challenges and offers her opinions on how voters can exercise their power to change the country’s future. “I could never have imagined in a million years that the underlying philosophy of apartheid would suddenly become progressive and be paraded around by young people who would be appalled if they understood that what they were really doing was supporting the foundational philosophy of apartheid,” Zille says during a frank and provocative conversation. – Melani Nathan

Emergency power programme sees accusations of graft

Emergency power programme sees accusations of graft
When the South African government announced the eight preferred bidders in the Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producer Procurement (RMIPPP) programme, local experts openly questioned the tender allocation. Eight bidders will provide an additional 1,845 megawatts, generated by various technologies. The project equates to R45bn of private-sector investment. The bidders are; ACWA Power Projects DAO, Oya Energy, Umoyilanga, and two projects for Mulilo Total and three for Karpowership SA. They use technologies including solar, photovoltaic, wind, liquefied natural gas and battery storage. Turkish firm, Karpowership has been allocated two-thirds of the programme’s capacity. The company plans to use liquified natural gas to produce power. Energy expert Chris Yelland questioned the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy and the  IPP Office about tender requirement exemptions granted to Karpowership by the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (DTIC) in March.  Clyde Mallinson, director at Virtual Energy and Power told MyBroadband that the Karpowership SA deal will lock the country into “dirty and expensive energy for the next 20 years.” DNG Energy, a South African gas company has formalised its objection to the awarded contracts in the form of a lawsuit, claiming that the tender process was tainted by corruption.– Melani Nathan

Success: What is it and does a high IQ help?

Success: What is it and does a high IQ help?
There is a perception that intelligence, as measured by an Intelligence Quotient test will lead to success and ultimately, happiness. However, for decades scholars, educators and scientists have debated the validity of these tests. The human brain possesses neuroplasticity which allows for tremendous change and the rapid formation of neural pathways, which facilitate learning. As people age, neuroplasticity wains and pathways are pruned. If a skill is no longer practised, it is lost. IQ fluctuates over time. A child prodigy may not be a genius (according to test criteria) at middle age. Some would say that the Emotional Quotient is a much more important indicator of success. The ability to connect with people, empathise and show compassion can have a tremendous impact on an individual’s life. Alistair Duff writes for FirstRand Perspectives as he delves into what leads to true fulfilment, which could be called the ultimate success. – Melani Nathan

SLR: Corrupt cronies come crawling out of Greensill wreckage

SLR: Corrupt cronies come crawling out of Greensill wreckage
Simon Lincoln Reader has a roundup of the Corruption Chronicles this week. Although the central character in each chapter is different, they share many traits. The power-hungry bury themselves at the centre of large corporations, confident they will never be caught. When their fortresses collapse, hollowed out by greed they’re prone to finger-pointing and protest. In a familiar unfolding, Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe who was once head of London’s Metropolitan Police as Commissioner was also found to be associated with Greensill Capital. – Melani Nathan

Mailbox: Censorship denies the right to make informed choices

Mailbox: Censorship denies the right to make informed choices
Claudia Dalebout has written to BizNews sharing her concerns about the effect of censorship of information and findings which diverge from views of authorities. YouTube has recently come under fire for using its misinformation policies to remove videos from the powerful platform. BizNews had a brush with YouTube’s censorship rules when a video was removed. It conveyed the views of Nick Hudson from PANDA, an organisation that has alternate views on the need for lockdowns and the scale of the Covid-19 pandemic in South Africa. To quote Biznews Founder Alec Hogg: “At BizNews we believe our community has the right to see all sides of an argument, especially when it involves something that has so massively disrupted livelihoods and economies.” It is in this spirit that we’ve created access on alternative platforms. – Melani Nathan

Judge Hlophe suspension delayed by Judicial Service Commission failures

Judge Hlophe suspension delayed by Judicial Service Commission failures
Over a decade after legal proceedings against Judge John Hlophe began, Hlophe is still actively participating in the South African Judicial system, at the highest level.  A finding of gross misconduct has been presented by the Judicial Conduct Tribunal which could lead to Hlophe’s removal. The process which would facilitate his removal could move slowly if past legal proceedings are anything to go by. Freedom Under Law, along with other representative bodies like Accountability Now are calling for Hlophe’s immediate suspension on the grounds of legal findings against him.  The Judicial Service Commission previously argued that because the charges were still being reviewed by the Judicial Conduct Tribunal ( in 2016) Judge Hlophe should be allowed to continue his duties as Judge President of the Western Cape High Court. The charges have now led to a guilty verdict against Hlophe. In order to remove Hlophe, the JSC must concur with the findings of the JCT and refer the matter to the National Assembly. The JSC has not begun its deliberations, which means the wheels of justice have, once again,  ground to halt. Freedom Under Law has appealed to the JSC to make its intentions known, in light of the serious legal findings against John Hlophe. – Melani Nathan
