♪ they say it's your birthday ♪ it's my birthday too, yeah finally this half hour, today marks the rarest day on the calendar. if you didn't realize it, today is leap day, february 29th. >> i love this day. it only comes around, of course, every four years, which works in anyone's favor who was actually born on this day. jamie livingston of ktre in eastern texas introduces us to one guy who was. >> reporter: you can't tell by looking at him, but micah shafer is among the few who celebrates his birthday every four years. this leap year he will be turning 7. >> you know, it really doesn't bother me. i guess 28 years, or 7, however you want to say it. >> reporter: micah says growing up he didn't have any other relatives with the same birthday but that didn't stop them from giving him a hard time about

his. >> growing up, it's -- some people like to pick and make fun. you just kind of have to have a good sense of humor. >> reporter: he says some relatives wouldn't give him a birthday present until his actual birthday, every 1,461 days. >> it's kind of exciting to actually have your birthday, your day of celebration. >> reporter: he says he often gets teased for technically being younger than all but one of his nieces and nephews. but he says he feels more like a child than an adult anyway. micah admits he didn't really know the history of leap year growing up. and sfa astronomy professor dr. norman rockworth concurs. he understands the confusion that people feel about the evolution of leap year. >> most civilizations were on a lunar calendar based on the phases of the moon, and the year was about 355 days long. well, everybody, even in grade school knows that's not the length of the year. so what they would do would be to add days here and there every now and again to try to get the calendar to catch up with the seasons. and sometimes they'd add whole months.
