TDEC public comment period closes Feb. 22 on permit renewal


SEVIERVILLE — Community members have until the afternoon of Feb. 22 to submit comments to the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation regarding an application for a permit renewal submitted by Johnson Matthey Inc.
According to a Jan. 19 public notice, “A major source operating permit is required by both the Federal Clean Air Act and Tennessee’s air pollution control regulations. However, it should be noted that the facility has a current major source operating permit.”
The facility is located in Sevierville at 1246 Airport Road, which is off Dolly Parton Parkway and across from Sevier County High School.
Johnson Matthey is a company founded in London in 1817, when it originally tested the purity of precious metals. The corporation now operates in more than 30 countries, with approximately 43 locations worldwide and in the United States. According to Johnson Matthey’s website, the company employs more than 15,350 people making a variety of products for customers.
