Lancaster County school district superintendents will join state lawmakers and education funding activists in a virtual forum on education funding at 2 p.m. Thursday. The forum, moderated by Democratic state Rep. Mike Sturla, of Lancaster, will feature presentations and discussions about how to make basic education funding more equitable in Pennsylvania. The public is invited to view the forum at RepMikeSturla.com. Sturla is expected to speak on his legislation that would accelerate full implementation of the stateâs fair funding formula established in 2016. Currently, only new additional money allocated in each yearâs state budget runs through the formula. Sturlaâs bill would establish a plan so all basic education dollars would flow through the formula in 10 years.
When: Hempfield school board meeting, April 13. What happened: Board members reviewed initial spending plan details for 2021-22, prior to the advertising of a proposed district budget and posting it for public review. Tax increase: Looking at a budget proposal calling for no new tax increase, and anticipating 1% growth in the districtâs real estate tax base, board members saw a projected deficit of $4.9 million. Other presented options included a 1% tax increase, where the average homeowner, according to projections, would pay $32 more per year. The same homeowner would pay $64 more annually with a 2% increase. Quotable: Chief Operations Officer Mark Brooks characterized the tax increase as âthe cost of a Starbucks coffeeâ per month.
When: Hempfield School District board meeting, April 6. Hempfield Rec: Adam Aloisi, the boardâs representative on the Hempfield Area Recreation Commission, reported that Hempfield Rec is looking for a board member from the Mountville area.
Itâs better late than never. Thatâs what Lancaster County educators are saying now that Gov. Tom Wolf has come around to the idea of prioritizing school employees in Pennsylvaniaâs next vaccine rollout. Wolf on Wednesday announced that the initial shipments of the single-dose Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine would be devoted to the 200,000 or so public and private school faculty and staff throughout the state. Local educators, many of whom have long awaited a chance to be vaccinated, said the announcement is welcome news, especially for those who have been teaching in-person since the fall. âWhile this effort is coming much later than we were led to believe, teachers will be grateful and most will vaccinate as soon as possible,â Hans Herr Elementary School fifth-grade teacher and Lampeter-Strasburg Education Association President Kristin Maser said. âWe know that coming to school is what is best for kids, and that is why we are here, but each day is a risk.â
