They also reveal surprising things about the Christchurch of the past.
Christchurch was just a decade old when
The Press arrived on May 25, 1861. It was clearly still under construction, as much an idea as a future city. They were in need of building materials. Look under “imports” in the first issue of the paper and you see that large numbers of shingles, posts and palings had just arrived from Hobart on board the Radiance, along with 35 bags of onions and 34 boxes of quinces.
