Even after recent dramas – #OscarsSoWhite controversies and the fiasco when
La La Land was wrongly named best picture – an Academy Award remains the ultimate prize in the movie industry.
It’s a validation of excellence that comes with more than 90 years of history, celebrity and glamour – as emotional as winning an Olympic gold medal for everyone from famous directors and actors to unknown visual effects technicians, make-up artists and the creators of animated shorts.
Part of the cachet is mixing with the movie elite at a ceremony in Los Angeles every February or March (moved to April this year because of the pandemic). But Oscars are also famously hard to win. Some of the world’s greatest filmmakers – Orson Welles, Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, Howard Hawks, Ingmar Bergman, Akira Kurosawa – have never won best director. And while it might change this year, American director Kathryn Bigelow is the only woman to have won.

Anthony Mackie's Best Performances, Ranked

Did you know that Anthony Mackie went to the Juilliard School for acting? I know, right? But it actually makes perfect sense. While most people think of the Captain America movies or
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier when they think of the actor, Anthony Mackie's movie and television performances are far more diverse than just superhero flicks.
In fact, more than half of the performances on this list have nothing to do with the MCU. And while Mackie has impeccable comic timing, a majority of these performances are for deeply dramatic roles. So, without further ado, Anthony Mackie’s best performances in television and film.

You don't have to head to a movie theater to watch this year's crop of Best Picture nominees. With only a few exceptions, all of the films nominated for Oscar's highest honor are available to stream from your home. And you don't have to restrict yourself to the current nominees: in the streaming age, almost all of the Best Picture winners from the past nine decades are a mere click away on digital video platforms or streaming services. Whether you want to revisit your favorite winners or fill your personal gaps in Oscar history, Yahoo Entertainment’s comprehensive streaming guide has you covered.

At last we may have a racing movie of rare quality and insight | Thoroughbred Racing Commentary

Among the pile of racing movies, only
Seabiscuit, in 2003, has been nominated.
The Oscars will be handed out again on April 25, via Zoom or Skype or some other sterile platform, with the nominees sitting at home in tuxedo jackets and sweatpants pretending George Clooney is out there somewhere and really cares. Safe to say that none of the eight Best Picture nominees is a racing flick, or even a movie with a sports backdrop, while the only horses to be found are ridden by the mounted police wading into the crowd of anti-war demonstrators in
The Trial of the Chicago 7.

Morgan Freeman will play a blues musician alongside Alfre Woodard and Common in Hate to See You Go.
The Seven actor will play Sonny Bell, an ageing Chicago blues musician, who refuses to retire and defiantly hits the road with his band for one last long-shot to keep doing the only thing that makes them all feel truly alive - play blues.
The movie is being helmed by Emmy Award-winning director Ben Tishler from a script he co-wrote with Rob Stone. Tishler's feature film directorial debut is inspired by Stone’s experiences touring and playing harmonica with many of blues music’s most revered artists.

For those hoping to make it in the industry, the past year has been particularly brutal and recovery feels slow to come.
Diana Romero had reached what she thought was a pivotal moment in her entertainment career in the early months of 2020. Romero, who started in physical production but pivoted to screenwriting a few years ago after she lost her mobility due to an illness in 2018, had written a vigilante-style pilot that caught the attention of producer Gary Lucchesi (
Underworld,
Million Dollar Baby) in the summer of 2019. He offered to help her with the project. But when the pandemic prompted California's stay-at-home order March 19, Lucchesi advised Romero to halt efforts because of the subject matter and state of the marketplace. "It was heartbreaking," she says.

Screen legend Sigourney Weaver leads a powerhouse cast in My New York Year, an adaptation of Joanna Rakoff’s beloved memoir, My Salinger Year. Set in New York in 1996, it recounts one heady summer in the city when a wannabe writer is hired as an assistant to JD Salinger’s decidedly old-school literary agent. The movie will screen virtually as part of this year’s Virgin Media Dublin International Film Festival, which continues until March 14.

Oscars are a time capsule. Though pundits may quibble about nominees or winners, one thing is beyond question: The film choices reflect the year in which they were released.
For example, in 1946, “The Best Years of Our Lives” hit a nerve as people were trying to rebuild their lives after WWII. The 1969 “Midnight Cowboy” captured all the sexual confusion, excitement and fear of that tumultuous decade.
More from Variety
This year’s contenders similarly reflect the moment we’re living in: a time of racial tension, gender battles, political wars, health issues and an overriding sense of doubt and isolation. A montage of 2020 film highlights would sum up the year just as accurately as newsreel clips.

For his entire tenure as an Avenger, Anthony Mackie had never been the first name on the call sheet.
In a galaxy of stars populated by Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson, the actor was aware of his place in the on-set pecking order, but would never miss an opportunity to make his presence felt.

It exemplifies the sort of winning tone that the 42-year-old actor has brought to his superhero character the Falcon, aka Sam Wilson, for six movies from the top-earning studio — wry and collegial humor, with the potential to turn explosive at any moment. Both Mackie and his character are set to burn brighter than ever when the Disney Plus series “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” lands on March 18.

Amy Poehler’s coming-of-age dramedy about a teenager who launches a feminist club to fight the patriarchy in her high school is produced like a slick piece of popular music, with all the easy listening/viewing vibes that suggests. Adapted from Jennifer Mathieu’s novel, Moxie is so indebted to the rhythms and grooves of other movies and shows that you can predict not just certain plot points, but certain
lines before they happen; like when you feel a chord change coming in a catchy song.

Theatrical Viewing Adds Tangible Benefits to Awards Hopefuls

Theatrical Viewing Adds Tangible Benefits to Awards Hopefuls
Tim Gray, provided by

Hollywood has always adapted to world changes, and Oscar campaigning this year has effectively adjusted to COVID. But one part of the awards season is missed more than the others: seeing a contender on the big screen.
Studios have delayed several big-scale films, including “Dune” and “West Side Story,” until later in 2021. So “small” movies are dominating the season, but even they are feeling the effects.
More from Variety
The sound design of “Minari” and “Sound of Metal,” the cinematography of “Nomadland” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” the production design of “One Night in Miami” and “The Father,” to name just a few, are admirable on the small-screen, but the nuances would be even more effective in a theater.

Upcoming Morgan Freeman Movies And TV: What's Ahead For The Oscar Winner

CinemaBlend
Morgan Freeman, the man who has warmed our hearts and brought joy to our ears with his distinct voice and its soothing cadence, has been a major fixture in film, television (both shows and commercials), and a growing number of documentaries over the years. This American treasure, having won over audiences with beloved movies like
The Shawshank Redemption,
March of the Penguins, and
Million Dollar Baby (for which he won an Academy Award), looks to continue doing what he does best even as he approaches his mid-80s. And with upcoming movies like
The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard on the way, it doesn’t look like we’ve seen the last of him yet.
