Thousands of jobs in jeopardy as SA moves away from coal
The South African government has committed to reaching net-zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2050. In order to achieve this, the Komati Power Station based in Mpumalanga needs to be decommissioned, says Bloomberg. ‘The province of Mpumalanga, in which Komati is located, [is] one of the most coal-dependent and polluted regions on Earth’. The switch to cleaner, renewable energy is essential – but it does come with issues of its own. Decommissioning the coal-fired plants will cost thousands of people their jobs and livelihoods. Head of Eskom’s Just Energy Transition office, Mandy Rambharos told Bloomberg about the communities around the plant. ‘If you look at some of these communities, they have been dependent on the power station and, in some cases, mining for many many decades, generations. You can’t just lock the door, throw away the keys and walk away’. South Africa has already seen a drastic rise in unemploy
Ten insights into 4IR in the mining industry
South Africa’s mining industry is increasingly making use of innovative and cutting-edge technologies to run more efficient operations.
In addition, the use of technologies helps to manage risk, to improve health and safety, reduce the cost of maintenance and extraction, as well as bringing about a skills uplift. “Adoption of innovations emerging out of the 4IR did not go into lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the application of 4IR technologies helping Minerals Council members and others to manage the pandemic more effectively,” said Minerals Council South Africa CEO Roger Baxter.

As rumours and conspiracy theories make the rounds online, you may be doubting the safety of the Covid-19 vaccine for both yourself and your children.
But according to a recent seminar hosted by the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS), there s no need to fear.
Children under 16 will not be given the vaccine, there is still more to be done in evaluating the vaccine s impact during pregnancy and yes you will be expected to complete an e-register following vaccination.

The Minerals Council South Africa is pleased to advise that it has entered into a strategic partnership with Investing in African Mining Indaba (https://www.MiningIndaba.com), for the Mining Indaba Virtual (2-3 February 2021).
The Minerals Council has long been a supporter, partner and participant in the annual in-person Mining Indaba that attracts many thousands of people, representing governments, companies, investors, media and other stakeholders, to Cape Town every year to engage in discussion and debate, and to attract and channel investment into African mining.
The global pandemic means that things will need to be different in February 2021, and we salute the organisers for taking the early step to transform this event onto a virtual platform.
