PUTRAJAYA: Mkini Dotcom Sdn Bhd which runs news portal, Malaysiakini paid the RM500,000 fine imposed by the Federal Court which found the company guilty of contempt of court over the publication of readers’ comments. Mkini Dotcom’s lawyer, A. Surendra Ananth, when contacted, confirmed that the fine has been paid at the court counter today. He said the company’s chief executive officer, Premesh Chandran personally went to the Palace of Justice to pay the fine. On Friday, the Federal Court gave Mkini Dotcom three days from Monday (Feb 22) to settle the fine. Mkini Dotcom was fined RM500,000 by a seven-member panel led by Court of Appeal president, Tan Sri Rohana Yusuf for contempt of court for facilitating the publication of five readers’ comments.

KUALA LUMPUR: News portal Malaysiakini posted today that it has collected RM688,120, even as it closed its fundraising campaign seeking RM500,000 to pay for its court fine for contempt conviction

The decision today would affect the running of news portals in accomodating its readers comments and may affect Facebook and Twitter comments as well. The judiciary's number two, namely Court of Appeal president Tan Sri Rohana Yusuf found Malaysiakini liable for contempt beyond reasonable doubt. Malaysiakini was represented by Datuk Malik Imtiaz Sarwar and Surendra Ananth, while senior federal counsel Suzana Atan and S Narkunavathy appeared for the Attorney General who initiated the contempt. Justice Rohana said having considered the defence of no knowledge and the rebuttals raised, they are satisfied with the facts and evidence before them that
