The thorny intersection of homosexuality and Islam is highlighted with charm and wit in “Breaking Fast,” writer-director Mike Mosallam’s lively tale based on his 2015 short film of one man’s fraught romantic journey over the course of the holy month of Ramadan.
Mo (Haaz Sleiman) is a kind, devoted doctor and observant Muslim of Lebanese descent living a low-key gay life in West Hollywood. His warm family supports his sexuality, unlike the rigid parents of his boyfriend, Hassan (Patrick Sabongui), who chooses the first night of Ramadan to inform Mo that he’s marrying a woman as a cover. As with all things surrounding the acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community, it’s taken a long time – too long – for movies centering on them to come to the fore. Even this far into the 21st century, a disheartening number of films continue to focus on the coming out experience instead of showing people living their lives like anybody else in the world.
In that respect, the new film
Breaking Fast is a nice change of pace, featuring Mo (Haaz Sleiman), a doctor living in West Hollywood, as completely out to his family and living proudly with his gay friends. It also has the unique aspect of Mo being a practicing Muslim, with his faith playing a big part in the film’s plot, as the film takes place during Ramadan, the holy month during which Muslims fast every day. ....

Breaking Fast: New film sees gay Muslim looking for love during Ramadan

The trailer has been released for
Breaking Fast, an upcoming queer film that follows a gay Muslim man trying to navigate romance during Ramadan.
The film, due for release on streaming platforms on 22 January, 2021, follows Mo (Haaz Sleiman), a practicing Muslim who is left reeling after a relationship falls apart.
In the aftermath of his failed relationships, Mo – a gay doctor living in West Hollywood – embarks on a new relationship with Kal (Michael Cassidy), an aspiring actor. Kal joins Mo during his nighty Iftars – the meal traditionally eaten by Muslims during Ramadan – and their relationship quickly blossoms.
The film debuted at the Cinequest Film and Creativity Festival in March and was later screened digitally at the Inside Out Film Festival in Toronto, among other festivals. ....
