I am looing for advice on soldering locomotive copper steam pipes and or finding a suitable solder. Steam at 100psi is at about 170'C. Solder weakens about 50'C below its melting point. So solder with a melting point well above 220'C is required which means typical soft solders leave no safety margin. I therefore intend to use 93.5%Pb, 5%Sn, 1.5%Ag melting at 296'C. I need to use a gas flame to do the heating. So far so good. I have built a workshop but didn't really want to just put my Dickson tool holders on a shelf, I had seen various designs & a supplier of a pre-made one, then a friend pointed me in the direction of a 3d-printed holder that sits on a bar. Using this as inspiration I thought I could design something that I can screw to the wall. I decided I would make them as individual items so I can just print more as I want. Here is the end design. Hi everyone Coming a bit late to this hobby (nearly 50!) - I've been a plastic modeller for years and always been fairly "handy" (my late father being a DCT teacher back in the day) 25 years in IT/management after a physics degree so applying some science/maths and building something tangible is very rewarding. I know what you mean, and I understand Duncan's comment about not all Chinese stuff being bad, but for me, the difference in cost between Loctite and others isn't worth the risk.
