Guest opinion: MEND marks April as Fair Housing Month

Every April during Fair Housing Month, the nation puts a spotlight on fair housing rights and efforts to end housing discrimination. Today, as our nation is having tough conversations about inequity and the need for change, I see similar parallels to the origins of Moorestown Ecumenical Neighborhood Development, MEND.
Since MEND’s founding in 1969 by nine Moorestown churches, we’ve been ahead of the curve in addressing affordable housing needs in South Jersey suburbs. Mr. Warren Sawyer, founding MEND trustee, shared his thoughts during MEND’s 50th anniversary.
He spoke of MEND’s early days, and how our founder Boyce Adams, a man with a vision and sensitive conscious, saw the need for change of housing for citizens living in neglected rowhomes on Beech Street in Moorestown. ....

Family gets Palmyra home from Habitat for Humanity

PALMYRA - The Belfquih family harbored the American dream of home ownership.
The family of four was living in affordable rental housing in Evesham but outgrew their apartment, and hoping one day to own a home.
Living across town in another Evesham apartment was the House family, hoping they could buy a more permanent home.
Through different Habitat for Humanity of Burlington and Mercer Counties programs, the families not only were able to buy affordable homes built for them recently by the nonprofit on the same Front Street block, but are now next-door neighbors in identical Habitat homes there.
Habitat also helped another neighbor on Front Street by paying for major repairs to a home he owned here. ....

MOORESTOWN, NJ A prominent Moorestown volunteer will go down in history as the recipient of the first Moorestown Humanitarian of the Month Award, the award committee announced.
John Khanlian, a Moorestown resident for 50 years, was named the award s first recipient. The award recognizes Moorestown residents who engage in humanitarian causes and might otherwise go unrecognized.
A charity of the winner s choice receives a $1,000 donation from the Janet Knowles Charitable Foundation. The winner receives a $100 gift certificate to a Moorestown restaurant of his choice, and two tickets to a Moorestown Theater Company (MTC) performance. ....
