Maya Weug, the Dutch/Belgian driver born in Spain, has made history not only by becoming the first FIA Girls on Track – Rising Stars driver to join the Ferrari Driver Academy, but the first-ever female to do so.
Nearly a year since the initial launch of the FIA Girls on Track – Rising Stars programme, and after months of intense preparation, training, scrutiny and pressure, Maya Weug has been selected to become the first-ever female student of the world-famous Ferrari Driver Academy.
16-year-old Maya will now embark on the most significant journey in her young racing career with a one-year contract at the Academy and a full season in a Formula 4 championship certified by the FIA.

Ferrari have confirmed Maya Weug will join their Driver Academy in 2021, starting racing in an F4 championship this year.
16 year old Dutch/Belgian driver Maya Weug has been signed to the Ferrari Driver Academy for 2021.
Ferrari, together with the FIA’s Women in Motorsport Commission, embarked on an extensive scouting programme in 2020, whittling down a list of 20 initial candidates to emerge with four finalists.
The programme had to be briefly postponed in November 2020, as one of the four finalists tested positive for COVID-19. Resuming in January, the four candidates went through a week of training and evaluation at Ferrari’s base at Maranello.

This week, Beth Paretta announced an Indianapolis 500 effort with driver Simona de Silvestro, leaving some to wonder, when will a woman return to the Formula 1 grid ?
Lella Lombardi, pictured above, is the last woman to race in Formula 1, and her last race in the series came in 1976.
Efforts including the W Series and the now 10-year-old FIA Women & Motor Sport Commission breeds hope that a woman will soon be back on the F1 grid.

Ferrari’s search for a female signing to their Driver Academy has concluded, with the successful candidate announced later this week. Ferrari, together with the FIA, will announce the successful candidate of their ‘Girls on Track-Rising Stars’ initiative later this week.
Set up by the FIA’s Women in Motorsport Commission, Ferrari held a shootout at their headquarters in Maranello to whittle down an extensive list of entrants to select just four candidates to go through to the finals.
Initially scheduled to be held in November, the finals had to be postponed as one of the candidates tested positive for the coronavirus. Fully recovered, the finals were held in the past week at Maranello. The four candiates are 15 year old Julia Ayoub, 14 year old Antonella Bassani, and 16 year olds Doriane Pin and Maya Weug.
