Mozilla has extended its protection against cross-site tracking for all Firefox users accessing the Web through Private Browsing windows. TikTok called out for lack of ads transparency and for failing to police political payola

TikTok announced a ban on political advertising all the way back in 2019. New research by Mozilla suggests that policy loopholes and lax oversight, especially around influencer marketing, coupled with an ongoing lack of ads transparency by TikTok which offers no publicly searchable ad archive are making its video-sharing platform vulnerable to passing off political ads as organic content. Mozilla says it found over a dozen instances of TikTok influencers across the political spectrum who were being paid (or otherwise compensated) by a variety of political organizations to promote partisan messages without disclosing that these posts were sponsored. ....

Mozilla Report Highlights 'Loophole' In TikTok Political Ads Ban

Mozilla, the tech company behind the Firefox browser, says it has found numerous instances of political advertising on TikTok from influencers despite the app saying there is a ban on those ads.

The Mozilla Foundation released a report on Thursday, “Th€se Are Not Po£itical Ad$: How Partisan Influencers Are Evading TikTok’s Weak Political Ad Policies,” that found that despite the popular app saying that it bans political ads, there are loopholes being exploited by groups like Turning Point USA, Prager University, and Today is America.

But looks can be deceiving. Some political TikToks are financed by political influence organizations like Charlie Kirk’s Turning Point USA, and, worse, they often give no indication that they are, in essence, paid political ads.
That’s the troubling finding of a new study by researchers at Mozilla. “What we found was evidence of paid or material relationships between political influencer influencers on TikTok and political organizations in the U.S. across both sides of the (political) spectrum,” said Mozilla researcher Becca Ricks, who co-authored the report. ....
