I have decided to join the ranks of Australia Day award recipients who are handing back their awards in response to the “upgrading” of Margaret Court’s Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) to the highest award of Companion (AC).
As an avid sports fan, I celebrated the awarding of an AO to Mrs Court, a suitable recognition of her outstanding sporting achievements.

I question, however, why it was deemed appropriate by the committee to upgrade her award. Her public comments in relation to LGBTI people – I won’t repeat them here – are damaging to significant parts of our community, and by no means represent the views of many Christians.

Church leader attacks Margaret Court

Church leader Reverend Alistair Macrae has hit out at Margaret Court for her controversial views on homosexuality as the fallout continues from the tennis champion's Australia Day honour.
Court, who holds the record for most grand slam singles titles with 24, was awarded the Companion of the Order of Australia - the nation's highest civilian honour - in a decision that has sparked furious backlash.
Reverend Macrae, a former president of the Uniting Church in Australia, was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2017 for his services to the community but joined the growing list of recipients who declared they would be handing back their awards in protest.

Australia Day 2021: Margaret Court won't hand back AO honour

Margaret Court believes her Companion to the Order of Australia nod in the Australia Day awards this year was for her tennis career and says “it was a long time coming”.

Kerry O'Brien refuses Order of Australia medal after Margaret Court receives Australia Day honour

Kerry O’Brien has rejected the Australia Day honour he was due to receive on Tuesday in protest at the “deeply insensitive and divisive decision” to give the country’s highest award to former tennis great Margaret Court.
“I believe the decision to award Australia’s highest honour to Margaret Court may serve to erode the hard-fought gains made over decades in reducing the impact of discrimination against members of the LGBTQ+ community,” the veteran journalist and former ABC current affairs host wrote in a letter to the office of the Governor-General, David Hurley.
Kerry O’Brien said giving Margaret Court an Australia Day medal “eroded the hard fought gains made over decades” to stop discrimination against the LGBTQI community.

MPs from both sides of federal politics have backed changes to the Order of Australia honours system, suggesting the awards could better reflect modern Australia.
Governor-General David Hurley told
The Sydney Morning Herald and
The Age that he wanted to change the awards system, acknowledging it had been historically biased against women and had not included enough Indigenous Australians.

Order of Australia has been biased against women, admits Governor-General David Hurley

Court is an all-time tennis great who holds 24 major singles titles, but her views on homosexuality, same-sex marriage and transgender people have been labelled offensive and intolerant. There have been calls for the Margaret Court Arena at Melbourne Park to be renamed.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison refused to comment on the honour, saying the Order of Australia was a “completely independent process”.

Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese said Mrs Court had “already been honoured for her tennis prowess”.
“She’s already an Officer of the Order of Australia,” he posted on Twitter. “I think it’s clear for everyone to see that making her a Companion of the Order of Australia has nothing to do with tennis.”
