Kimberly Johnson, a University of Oregon administrator and novelist, will soon have her debut book, “This Is My America,” developed as a series for the HBO Max streaming service.
The UO vice provost for undergraduate education and student success sold the rights to her award-winning novel to film production company Picturestart of Los Angeles, according to an Around the O press release.
“This Is My America” follows 17-year-old Tracy Beaumont, a Black, Gen-Z high school student in Galveston, Texas, who lives for social justice causes. As she’s fighting for Innocence X, a criminal justice organization whose mission includes her death row-sentenced father, her brother, a state track star, is accused of murdering a white classmate. Beaumont’s task doubles as she races to clear her father’s name and prove her brother’s innocence.
