“Coming 2 America,” the sequel was released this week on Amazon Prime. "Coming To America set the tone [within mainstream Western cinema] for Black Panther with the African garments and the culture," says Gabrielle Tesfaye, a US director of Ethiopian and Jamaican heritage whose 2019 film Yene Fikir, Ethiopia (My Love, Ethiopia) was nominated for a Film Africa award. However, more broadly, Tesfaye believes that “Africa” is still constantly misunderstood and generalised about, in film and otherwise, because it remains such an unknown location to most Westerners. “Never seeing it for themselves,” she says, “they really don’t know how diverse it is. In the US it’s not as travelled [to] as Asia, South America or even Europe.”…The real answer, of course, is to look to African cinema itself. As Tesfaye says, “there’s a lot of films set in Africa by actual African filmmakers who are portraying their people in their country in such an amazing imaginative, empowering light.”

Though it was scheduled for a March 5th release, Amazon Prime surprised subscribers by sharing
Coming 2 America a day earlier this Thursday, allowing Eddie Murphy fans the chance to dig into the comedy sequel sooner than expected. And seeing as they’ve been after more from Prince (now King) Akeem and company for over 30 years, reducing the waiting time by 24 hours was a nice touch.
The good news is that social media seems to be loving the new movie. Picking up decades after 1988’s
Coming To America, the sequel sees Murphy’s Akeem about to step up to the throne of Zamunda after the retirement of his father, King Jaffe (James Earl Jones). However, first he must journey back to New York with best pal Semmi (Arsenio Hall) to reunite with a son he never knew he had, played by Jermaine Fowler. Leslie Jones, Tracy Morgan and Wesley Snipes, as the evil General Izzi, also feature.

Years ago, Eddie Murphy started noticing more and more fans quoting lines from his 1988 hit comedy “Coming to America,” the rom-com fairytale in which his charming Prince Akeem of the fictional African nation of Zamunda defies tradition to find true love in Queens, N.Y. He noticed as people flocked to pop-up replica McDowell’s restaurants, and when even Beyoncé and Jay-Z paid homage, donning costumes a la Zamundan royalty one Halloween.
“I’ve done over 40 movies in the last 40 years, and I’ve had movies that have been more commercially successful than ‘Coming to America,’ but I don’t have any movie that became this cult movie,” Murphy said over video chat last month. “No one dresses up like Axel Foley for Halloween.”
