New research from the University of Kansas just published in the
International Journal of Behavioral Medicine is shedding light on this biopsychosocial process that can lead to poor grades, withdrawal from classes and even students who drop out. Indeed, about 40% of freshman don’t return to their universities for a second year in the United States.
“We were interested in finding out what predicted students’ performance in statistics classes — stats classes are usually the most dreaded undergrad class,” said lead author Nancy Hamilton, professor of psychology at KU. “It can be a particular problem that can be a sticking point for a lot of students. I’m interested in sleep, and sleep and anxiety are related. So, we wanted to find out what the relationship was between sleep, anxiety and test performance to find the correlation and how it unfolds over time.”

the International Journal of Behavioural Medicine published new research by university of Kanas that explained students who drop out, withdrew from classes and with poor grades had a active kind of biopsychosocial process between the test anxiety and sleeping habit.

"We were interested in finding out what predicted students' performance in statistics classes -- stats classes are usually the most dreaded undergrad class," said lead author Nancy Hamilton, professor of psychology at KU.
The researchers were more interested to know about the link between sleep, anxiety and test performance, so they surveyed 167 students enrolled in statistics by using electronic battery of measures and filled out Sleep Mood Study Diaries to know about their sleep quality, anxiety levels and test scores.

College students across the country struggle with a vicious cycle: Test anxiety triggers poor sleep, which in turn reduces performance on the tests that caused the anxiety in the first place.

Hearthstone Holds Groundbreaking for Expansion of The Cottages

Hearthstone, A Ministry of Wesley Life, held a groundbreaking ceremony Friday to celebrate the expansion of The Cottages.
Hearthstone’s Executive Director Nancy Hamilton says the occasion reflects a significant community fundraising campaign to add 36 suites to the campus off of North Main Street in Pella. She says a water-main break caused flooding of Jefferson Place on February 20, 2020, and this new construction will, in part, offset the loss of that facility.
“The good news is, however, that provided we are able to secure the needed private funding, we will continue to honor our Jefferson Place history with a similar model of care with an updated design at The Cottages. We look forward to welcoming back all Jefferson Place residents who would like to return to their homes with us.”

Researchers answer call to improve sleep for firefighters to boost performance and safety

Fri, 02/26/2021
LAWRENCE — A team of investigators at the University of Kansas is collecting data and designing interventions to improve the quality of sleep for firefighters and paramedics in the Lawrence Douglas County Fire-Medical Department.
For these first responders, better sleep could improve their quality of life and boost their performance as they encounter life-and-death situations. The stressful work of responding to emergencies demands both physical stamina and quick decision making.
“Among the many responsibilities of their job, our EMTs and paramedics have to make drug calculations regardless of the time of day or night or situation, so sleep deprivation is a concern,” said Kevin Joles, division chief with LDCFM. “If somebody is sleep deprived and distracted when throwing a ladder against a house and they hit a power line, it could kill them or another firefighter.”
