The Fairfield City Council met Tuesday night. After approval of minutes and bills, Joseph Harrelson of 809 George St. addressed the council during public session. Harrelson, who has resided on George St. for 14 years is seeking extra patrols and help from the city to address issues in his neighborhood, which he says is a drug area that needs to be cleaned up. Harrelson claims to have had his property damaged on multiple occasions, including the breaking of the windows on his house and the killing of his dogs. In routine business, the purchase of a police vehicle was pulled from the agenda due to the dealership being unable to take the order for the truck until October. The council discussed the police eligibility list stating that as of last Friday the city had four applicants, however one applicant had withdrawn. Of the three remaining, all passed the written testing and will be allowed to do the physical agility testing on Saturday. Over 20 people have now tested over the past month, but the city still lacks the eligibility list to get manpower back into the department, with officers currently working overtime, days off, and vacation days. The council has already approved an extension on the residency clause, allowing up to 45 minutes distance from the department, and the city is currently offering a lateral transfer move with a $2500 sign-on bonus. The city hopes to test again in September. Also in routine business, discussion turned to Sunrise Sanitation and their request to open the contract for rate increase. The majority of the council feel there must be give and take in the negotiation process, and to date Sunrise has shown no willingness to negotiate. The council also discussed aspects of the standing agreement with Sunrise that are not being fulfilled. Ultimately the council did not agree to Sunrise's request to raise fees at this time. Cherokee Nation adds district judge following McGirt ruling

TAHLEQUAH – The Tribal Council on March 15 appointed a new Cherokee Nation district judge as part of the tribe’s ongoing efforts to ensure criminal justice is served following the historic McGirt decision in 2020 and a March 11 ruling from the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals, which will likely lead to the dismissal of hundreds of state criminal cases in the CN reservation.
Councilors appointed Nathan Barnard as a District Court judge. In recent months, the Council has also appointed Amy Page as a district judge and Rex Earl Starr as a Supreme Court justice.
“In light of recent and long-overdue court decisions providing recognition of the Cherokee Nation’s reservation, and ultimately all of the Five Tribes, we are committed to ensuring Cherokee citizens and all members of our communities are protected,” said Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr. “I commend the Council of the Cherokee Nation for appointing these judges and helping us to bolster our criminal justice system. We must continue to be ready to take action and help victims and their families and, whenever possible, file charges in our tribal court system. These judicial appointments are a critical part of that process.”
