Nyanza, Western grumble over BBI few additional constituencies

THE STANDARD POLITICS Kuria East MP Marwa Kitayama. There is growing disquiet in Nyanza and Western because of ‘few’ additional constituencies the regions will get if the Constitutional of Kenya (Amendment) Bill, 2020, sails through in the referendum. The Bill, popularly referred to as the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) Bill, proposes to increase the number of constituencies from 290 to 360. The proposed law will see Deputy President William Ruto’s Rift Valley stronghold getting the lion’s share of the electoral areas followed by Nairobi, Central and Coast. The Bill, that was passed by the county assemblies and has been forwarded to Parliament, indicates that Rift Valley will get 23 new constituencies, Nairobi 12, Central Kenya 11 and Coast 10.

Violence concluded by-elections was planned by politicians, says Matiang i

It shameful that some people can plan to divide because of elections. We will not allow them to cross the country in an attempt to divide the country and cause disharmony. On March 4, police arrested Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei and MPs Didmas Barasa (Kimilili), Wilson Logo (Chesumei) and Nelson Koech (Belgut constituency) over allegedly being in possession of illegal firearms and causing violence in the Kabuchai by-elections. The leaders denied the claims saying they were monitoring the progress of the by-election. On Friday, March 5, Matiangi said all politicians involved in Political violence will have their firearm licences cancelled. On Saturday, March 6, the firearm Licensing Board revoked licenses of Kimilili’s Didimus Barasa and that of his Mt Elgon counterpart Fred Kapondi. The two were ordered to surrender their firearms within 24 hours.
