Nave Andromeda incident
A senior CPS prosecutor has said there is no evidence that an attempt was made to hijack or endanger an oil tanker during an incident off the Isle of Wight.
The statement by Joanne Jakymec, chief prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) Wessex, comes after the Home Office criticised a decision to drop the prosecution against seven Nigerian men detained aboard the Nave Andromeda by British special forces.
Two men, Matthew John Okorie, 25, and Sunday Sylvester, 22, had been charged with an offence relating to conduct endangering ships under Section 58 of the Merchant Shipping Act 1995, but their charges have now been dropped.

Two men were charged and appeared in court over the weekend as part of the ongoing investigation into the maritime security incident that took place on board the Nave Andromeda off the coast of the Isle of Wight on October 25.
Specifically, seven stowaways reportedly hijacked the vessel in the English Channel and threatened the crew who retreated into the ship’s citadel for safety reasons.
The vessel was taken over by the UK Armed Forces following a request from the police on the same evening. Having gained control of the vessel, the armed forces detained seven individuals. The crew members were reported to be safe and well.

Two Nigerian Men Charged Over Stowaway Alert Oil Tanker in UK Waters

27 Dec 2020
Two men appeared in Southampton Crown Court on Saturday, charged with alleged crimes relating to a major security alert in the English Channel that led to British special forces raiding an oil tanker.
Matthew John Okorie, 25 and Sunday Sylvester, 22 were charged with endangering a ship under the UK’s Merchant Shipping Act 1995 and will appear in court again in January for trial. They are two of seven men who were arrested onboard the Nave Andromeda oil tanker in October after the crew reported the presence of stowaways on the ship.
All of those arrested are reported to be of Nigerian origin, and the operators of the Greek ‘owned’, Liberian-flagged ship said they believed the men boarded the ship while it was moored off Lagos.
