Your biggest concern here, he s going to be navigating, using a sonar, right? sonar system so that the sonar system will tell if there s any major obstacles in the way. the other stuff will be visual. it will be a combination of operating by sonar and by visual through the ports or through a video camera. and the sonar is going to give you a range of about how far? well, if you re up off the bottom you can see probably 500 meter or so. when you re flat on the bottom it s going to be a very short range, something like five, ten meters. i think we were talking yesterday, chris, that, you know, probably 15 hours maybe they could spend either in an rov or something like this? yeah that would be a long shift. but certainly i m not volunteering for that, just so you know. but you know, if you include the time up and down, that s half the time. if you get six or seven good hours on the bottom, that s a pretty good shift with an rov. ....

We saw martin savidge navigating and going around and doing everything trying to get down, frantically trying to reduce altitude. it is an aggressive maneuver. what we saw on the radar returns was two-minute turn and remaining on heading for over an hour. go ahead. we need to try to zero in on the things that we can defend. and once you get the transponder an the acars turned off, now the airplane is free, except for that skin paint that the military radar can look at and the military radar that we have been getting reports on just are not that great. i m really concerned about the pilots right now. yeah. you agree with that, right? it is not that you agree it is not that great? i think jim sort of absolutely is right. i think the air defense radars that we re looking at have a better capability, but my question is if the military is saying it descended to 12,000 feet, that, to me, is something very unusual. why didn t they interrogate? ....

Communicating at that point in time is like i ve said before, it just may have not have been a priority then and there. mitchell, that is a good question. initially that s what we said. you re right. that s the first thing everyone said. why wouldn t they communicate some sort of emergency. well, it s true that you aviate first. you navigate. but communication is not far behind. it s not like it s 50th on the list. these guys sounded like they were aviating and navigating. they turned. they had a destination for that turn. they were aviating fine. the airplane. to me communication was right there. we should also point out in order to communicate it s not like you have to reach up and turn on a radio or turn a knob. there s a simple lever oen the back of the yoke. it s a switch your hand is already on if you ve got your hand on the yoke. you click it and talk. it s that simple. and in almost all the other emergencies that have been declared, you take a look at value jet that wen ....

yes sh, a broad look at how would have happened, and this is not absolute with 370, but could have. we have set up the simulator to emulate everything that we know about 370, and in other words, up at altitude, and this is the part of the flight where the seat belt sign has been turned off. we have loaded up the fuel the same way they have loaded it up, but the only difference is that it is night time for the purposes of visualization, and we made it daylight. and so up in altitude and everything is going fine when all of the sudden, there would be an alarm in the cabin. it would sound like this. that is the fire alarm, and instantly, you know that we have a serious problem. fire is about the worst thing that can happen on an aircraft. and this is probably the one of the scenarios that the pilots train for most. immediately, mitchell is the captain that we have delegated to fly the plane, and i m assisting navigating. he is trying to get the plane down on the deck, and while ....

Is, we are always flying that airplane. always fly the airplane, afate, navigate, communicate. communicate is a little lower on the totem pole of concern. it could be if you have the points going out an there is something happening in the plane and the pilots are focused on a v afating and navigating. the pilots have the most time to communication at this point. if it was landing or takeoff, i could see they wouldn t communicate. that flight that went into the hudson river, no time to talk. it just said, unable. if you are higher up, 35,000 feet, there is plenty of time unless something happened dramatically, a catastrophic explosion, anything like that. by now, i think we would have seen evidence of that. of course, the other ....
