Thunder Draft: Best Non-Lottery First Round Options
With their second and third picks in the 2021 NBA Draft, the OKC Thunder will select at No. 16 and No. 18 overall.
Jun 26, 2021
While the Oklahoma City Thunder's No. 6 overall pick is certainly the most crucial in July's draft, they've still got two additional picks just outside the lottery.
Both picks acquired through trade, the Thunder will select at No. 16 and No. 18 overall in the 2021 NBA Draft, where they'll be able to find quality prospects with how deep this draft is.
“The draft overall, I like it," said Thunder GM Sam Presti last week. "We value No. 16 for a reason. We think there’s a player there.”

Raptors have Interviewed Tennessee's Keon Johnson

Caitie McMekin/News Sentinel via Imagn Content Services, LLC
The Toronto Raptors have spoken to Tennessee's Keon Johnson ahead of the 2021 NBA Draft
If any player is going to make a massive jump up NBA draft boards following the combine it's only fitting that it's Tennesee's Keon Johnson.
Coming into the combine Johnson was viewed as a top-10 player with some high-end potential, according to Sports Illustrated's Jeremy Woo. The 6-foot-5 freshman averaged 11.3 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists last season with some very pedestrian shooting numbers. But following his record-breaking 48-inch vertical leap at the combine, he's certainly attracting a closer look and the Toronto Raptors are one of the teams he's interviewed with.

NBA draft 2021: Simulating lottery outcomes - Sports Illustrated

May 27, 2021
This year’s draft lottery, set for June 22, is shaping up as one of the most consequential in recent memory. There’s a little more hanging in the balance than usual. Start with the quality prospects at the very top of the class and consider the various teams hoping to obtain or keep protected draft picks, and the usual intrigue that surrounds lottery night feels magnified. After the NBA conducted draft tiebreakers this week (and with the early-entry deadline a few days away), we’re inching closer to a concrete picture of what to expect on July 29.
Reprising an annual thought exercise—the first version of this column ran in May 2020, before the draft was delayed multiple months—I turned back to’s trusty simulation tool to play around with potential lottery scenarios. We still have time to think about the possibilities, and this process often leads to useful takeaways about what to expect. For the sake of brevity, I’m not going to spend much time breaking down individual prospects here (see the most recent Big Board for that), but I will contextualize some potential decisions and team fits.

Longhorns Kai Jones, Greg Brown in latest NBA Mock Draft
The former Texas forwards were both first-round picks, with each landing in a place that could use their skill set to improve depth in the frontcourt
May 25, 2021
Texas Longhorns forwards Kai Jones and Greg Brown were included in the first round of the latest 2021 NBA Mock Draft, released after the NBA Lottery Draft field was set.
Neither Jones nor Brown were lottery picks in this mock.
Jones, a sophomore who declared for the draft shortly after the Longhorns lost to Abilene Christian in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, went No. 19 overall to the Memphis Grizzlies. The mock’s author, Jonathan Givony, notes that Jones’ ‘explosiveness and versatility in the front court’ would ‘shore up their (the Grizzlies) depth.’

Updated Scenarios for Oklahoma City Thunder's First Round Draft Picks - Sports Illustrated Oklahoma City Thunder News, Analysis and More

May 13, 2021
The Oklahoma City Thunder’s hopes for three first round picks in the 2021 NBA Draft have been officially dashed.
The Golden State Warriors currently sit at 37-33, with only two games remaining in their season. The pick the Warriors sent to Oklahoma City in exchange for
Kelly Oubre Jr. is a Top 20-protected pick, with the Lakers currently sitting at 21st in the draft standings at 40-30. Impossible for Golden State to make up the ground, the protection will keep the pick with the Warriors and convey to a second round pick for the Oklahoma City Thunder.
So unless a trade goes down on draft night, the Thunder will have to be happy with their two picks.

Raptors' Dreams Come True With Evan Mobley - Sports Illustrated Toronto Raptors News, Analysis and More

The Toronto Raptors select Evan Mobley from the University of Southern California
There may not be a player better suited for the Raptors in this year's class than USC's Evan Mobley. He mixes the kind of high-end talent that every team is looking for with the kind of big-man size Toronto is thirsting for. He's a 7-foot, 215-pound versatile big who can basically do it all on the basketball court.
"There’s a real argument that Mobley is the most intriguing true big to enter the draft since Karl-Anthony Towns in 2015, or if you’re feeling bold, Joel Embiid in 2014, and he’s built a sneaky, if not popular, case as an alternative option at No. 1," Sports Illustrated's Jeremy Woo wrote. "Mobley looks like the type of mobile shot-blocker and space-eraser you can build a defense around, with overwhelming length and exceptional instincts, rarely fouling and playing a mature, composed game most nights. The big variable here lies on offense, where Mobley has always been an excellent ball-handler and passer for his size, but falls something short of being a No. 1 option. Mobley can be too deferential sometimes, and while there’s much more substance to his game than volume offense—he’s blossomed as a playmaker and projects to shoot the three effectively—he’ll be more comfortable playing next to ball-dominant teammates than shouldering the load, at least in the early part of his career. His long reach makes it difficult to alter his shot in the paint, and he’s a steady finisher, but quality touches often have to be manufactured for him. But even if Mobley levels out as a second or third offensive option, noting his probable defensive impact, you’ve got a special prospect."

Standings Watch: Thunder making late run at top pick
Oklahoma City is sliding hard and fast, and could make a late run at the coveted top pick in the 2021 NBA Draft
The Oklahoma City Thunder haven't won a game in April.
A nine-game losing streak wasn't imaginable when Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was averaging 27.4 points in a nine-game stretch from late February to early March, or when a starting lineup of Darius Bazley, Kenrich Williams, Justin Jackson, Luguentz Dort and Al Horford were beating Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Bucks by five points.
But whether the streak is by design or incidental matters not, the Thunder are sliding hard and fast.

Baylor trio of Butler, Teague, Mitchell headed to title game

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The only reason Baylor's backcourt can't be considered a true brotherhood is the blood coursing through their veins.
Whether they were declaring together for the NBA draft or withdrawing from it, transferring from other schools or helping newcomers acclimate to coach Scott Drew's program, Jared Butler, MaCio Teague and Davion Mitchell have done just about everything together over the past couple of years.
That includes leading the Bears to their first national championship game since the 1940s.
But that much-anticipated showdown with unbeaten Gonzaga on Monday night, the only team that kept the Bears from ascending to No. 1 all season, probably wouldn't have been happened had those three not returned to Baylor this season.
