were back live in the cnn newsroom. i m jim acosta in washington. us diplomatic personnel and their families are now safely out of sudan as the african nation descends into increasing violence. they were airlifted to neighboring djibouti and a dramatic overnight evacuation about 100. us special operations forces carried out a daring mission today, the u. s embassy in khartoum is closed. and the decision to evacuate personnel comes after a week of heavy fighting between sudan s military and arrival paramilitary group more than 400 people have been killed, including one american, the state department says there are about 16,000, potentially as many as 19,000 americans in sudan. most though, are dual nationals and our correspondents are well positioned here. and overseas to bring you all of the angles of this developing story. let s go to cnn s sam kiley live from djibouti. he s gonna be there in just a moment. let s begin with cnn s oren liebermann . he s over at the pent ....

i m jim acosta in washington will be in this hour of americans caught up in the escalating crisis in sudan. just minutes ago, the u. s state department announced it will carry out a military assisted evacuation of government personnel if the crisis worsens . in the past week, more than 400 people have died since two rival generals first lead their forces into a battle for control of the country. that death toll includes at least one american. both sudan s army and its paramilitary rival. the rsf say they will help evacuate for nationals. the u. s is making preparations to get diplomatic personnel right out right now. but the white house says private citizens should not expect and evacuation. we have correspondents in the military expert here to help us tackle all of the angles of the story. let s begin with cnn s larry meadow, a live in nairobi, kenya. larry. i know things are very fluid at the moment. but what s the latest on these evacuations? jim right now there s ev ....
Structure, and that effort in itself was quite an undertaking the roads, of course very unsafe in the sudanese capital at this moment, but as soon as those diplomats were out of the country, the president did release a statement announcing this effort. he said he is grateful for the unmatched skill of our service members who successfully brought these diplomats to safety i think djibouti, ethiopia and saudi arabia, which were critical to the success of our operation. the president went on to say we are temporarily suspending operations at the us embassy in sudan but our commitment to the sudanese people and the future they want for themselves is an ending. the president also said that he would continue to receive reports on these efforts to potentially help other private american citizens leave the country. there won t be a broad scale military evacuation of those citizens, but he will be kept updated on the efforts that could be used to help them get out, of course, looming over all o ....
