Friends of York Walls volunteer Sally Hauser shares all the insider information you need to know about one of Yorkshire’s most prominent historical treasures.
There’s a common saying in York: ‘the streets are gates, the gates are bars and the bars are pubs’.  No visit to the city is complete without a wander round the ramparts encircling it. But York’s walls are not just for the tourists. Many residents use them on a daily basis to commute, take exercise or simply soak up the ambience that living so close to almost 2,000 years of history offers.

Excavation finds inspired art for new hospice 10 years ago

Excavation finds inspired art for new hospice 10 years ago
Coins, tools and pottery dating back thousands of years, found during archaeological excavations in Worthing, inspired a series of artworks for an exhibition ten years ago. The historical treasures were unearthed in 2008, during the excavation of the new St Barnabas House hospice site in Titnore Lane. Artist and printmaker Helen Higgins was given access to the finds, which she then interpreted through a series of prints and mixed media works. Her art was exhibited alongside a number of the original treasures at Worthing Museum and Art Gallery in January 2011.
