Rare singing dog found flourishing in remote Indonesia region

dimanche, 6 septembre 2020 à 16:25 - The New Guinea singing dog, believed to be extinct, was rediscovered during a 2016 expedition in a remote area in western New Guinea, known as Papua, in Indonesia.
The New Guinea Highland dog, otherwise known as the New Guinea singing dog, is considered to be an extremely rare breed. It is renowned for its distinctive barks and howls. It can actually make harmonic sounds that mimic the calls of a humpback whale, according to the San Diego Zoo.
The existence of the dogs came to light after a specimen was found at an altitude of about 2,100 metres in Central Province, Papua New Guinea, in 1897, according to a study. In 2016, they were spotted in the wild for the first time in 50 years. They were believed to be extinct because of habitat loss and hybrid breeding with feral village dogs. ....

Solving the Mystery of New Guinea's Highland Wild Dogs

Solving the Mystery of New Guinea’s Highland Wild Dogs
Research pointing to origins of this rare canine could aid conservation efforts.

The highlands of New Guinea echo with strange, whale-like howls. These ghostly vocalizations emanate from an unexpected source. Improbably, a little-known canine prowls the steep mountains that bisect the world’s second-largest island, picking its way along treacherous outcrops and extracting a living from some of the least explored terrain on the planet.

New Guinea highland wild dogs are the original New Guinea singing dogs

Significance
New Guinea singing dogs (NGSD) are distinctive among the Canidae because of their unique and characteristic vocalization, isolated habitat, and status as a rare representative of wild dogs. Their scarcity, combined with the knowledge that none have been captured or exported since the late 1970s, supports the hypothesis that NGSD are extinct in the wild. We have analyzed the nuclear genome of the first dogs captured from the highlands of Papua in approximately 50 y. We provide DNA-based evidence for an ancestral relationship between highland wild dogs (HWD) and captive NGSD suggesting that the founding population of the NGSD is not, in fact, extinct and that HWD should be resourced for conservation efforts to rebuild this unique canid population. ....

James “Mac” McIntyre, an intrepid 66-year-old grandfather and retired teacher from sea-level Fernandina Beach, can’t wait to get back there for a fourth trip.
He wants to again find the elusive, shy wild dogs that live in that rugged, challenging land a hardy group of animals, one of the rarest dogs in the world, once thought by many to be extinct in the wild. ....
