Harrisburg, PA - Continuing the rollout of his groundbreaking PAsmart initiative, Governor Tom Wolf announced $10.8 million in PAsmart Advancing Grants to expand access to computer science and STEM education for Pennsylvania learners. Combined with PAsmart Targeted Grants announced in 2020, the Wolf administration has awarded nearly $20 million to bolster STEM and computer science (CS) in schools during the 2020-21 school year.
“Workers in all types of jobs increasingly need to use computers and technology,” said Governor Wolf. “In order to meet that demand, I launched PAsmart in 2018 to expand science and technology education.

Pennsylvania provides millions in grants for target job training

To strengthen workforce development and close skills gaps highlighted amid the coronavirus pandemic, Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf is partnering with local employers. The state has awarded 28 PAsmart Next Generation Industry Partnership grants totaling almost $4.7 million, Wolf announced Jan. 11.
The grants unite various employers in the same industries — construction, financial services, healthcare, hospitality, manufacturing, retail, technology and transportation — to create targeted job training programs for Pennsylvania workers to obtain the skills needed for competitive positions. The new grants are in addition to $6.5 million in PAsmart grants previously awarded to increase apprenticeship job training, per the announcement.
"Employers need skilled workers now more than ever," Wolf said in a statement. His administration has invested $88 million through PAsmart since 2018, according to the announcement.

A Lehigh Valley partnership is one of 28 statewide industries receiving nearly $4.7 million in grant funding to bolster workforce development.
The Smart Energy Initiative of Southeastern Pennsylvania, a partnership including representatives in Northampton, Lehigh, Berks, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Lancaster, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties, is receiving a $220,000 slice of the total funding. The partnership was founded in 2007 to support the region’s smart energy industry by providing comprehensive workforce and business development services to partnering energy organizations. Its mission promotes the growth of the smart energy industry by providing comprehensive workforce and economic development services to partnering companies, the partnership’s website states.
