After Maui's wildfire, with tourism down and Hawaii housing costs already high, some are making mainland moves, with California and Las Vegas in their sights.

More than two weeks after the fires in Lahaina displaced thousands of residents and their pets, owners continue to search and hope for a reunion.

They thought the grass fire was contained, but wind conditions were still extreme. Now the decision to pull firefighters away shortly before the Maui fire reignited has become a flashpoint, as questions mount over whether more could have been done to stave off the destruction.

The teams are part of an effort approved by Gov. Gavin Newsom, which also includes units from Riverside, Alameda and Sacramento counties.
