Washington [US], May 12 (ANI): Gulping down a few drinks with a stranger may make you get closer to them, as per the findings of a study with pandemic-related implications. Researchers report that strangers who consume alcohol together may keep their distance initially but draw physicallycloser as they become intoxicated.
No previous studies have tested the effects of alcohol consumption on social distance, the researchers say. They report the new findings in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
To test how social familiarity influences drinking behavior, the researchers asked study subjects to each bring a friend who would also participate in the study. 212 young, healthy social drinkers were assigned to different experimental conditions. ....

Intoxication brings strangers physically closer, study finds

Social distancing would be almost impossible when pubs fully reopen, a new study suggests.
According to researchers in the US, strangers who consume alcohol together may keep their distance initially, but draw physically closer as they become intoxicated.
The experts, at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, compared the effects of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks on distancing between friends and strangers.
In a lab setting, alcohol caused the strangers to draw significantly closer to each other during social exchange, reducing physical proximity at a rate with potentially important implications for public health .
The study suggests trying to implement any form of social distancing in British pubs once they open properly would be a lost cause.   ....

A group of people got drunk in a lab to monitor how well they maintained social distancing after a tipple or two. Spoiler alert: they didn’t manage very well.
More than 200 young, healthy social drinkers were assigned to drink or not drink in various experimental conditions for the study. Participants were asked to bring a friend along; they were then either assigned to drink with their mate, have a non-boozy bevvy with their mate, or do the same with someone else’s friend (a.k.a a total stranger) – all while being filmed. ....
