Bihar political crisis live news: Will Nitish Kumar resign from Bihar CM post today? Suspense continues over Mahagathbandhan's fate

Bihar political crisis live news updates: All attention is focused on Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who is expected to resign from the post of Bihar CM today. Despite the intense political turmoil within the 'Mahagathbandhan,' Kumar has chosen to maintain a deafening silence, disregarding pleas from allies RJD, Congress, and the Left to provide clarity on the intense speculation about his future steps. For him, it seems to be business as usual. The ruling Mahagathbandhan in Bihar is seemingly on edge, with strong indications suggesting that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, also the JD(U) president, may once again make a volte-face and rejoin the BJP-led NDA.The JD-U core committee, led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, convened a meeting on Saturday, and according to reports, there is a possibility that Kumar may resign from the Bihar CM post today.Meanwhile, RJD leaders in Bihar gathered at the residence of party president Lalu Prasad on Saturday amid fears that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar might abandon the party. The meeting, attended by senior leaders, including members of the state legislature, included prominent figures such as Lalu Prasad, his son Tejashwi Yadav (Deputy CM), and wife Rabri Devi (former chief minister).Notably, the RJD is the largest alliance partner in the Mahagathbandhan, which includes Congress and three Left parties. The alliance falls eight members short of a majority in the assembly in the event of JD(U) pulling out under Kumar's leadership. In the Bihar Assembly of 243, the RJD has 79 MLAs, followed by the BJP with 78, JD(U) with 45, Congress with 19, CPI (M-L) with 12, two each of CPI(M) and CPI, four seats for Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular), one for AIMIM, and one Independent legislator. If Nitish Kumar makes this move, it would be the fourth time he switches sides. Previously an NDA ally since the 1990s, he quit the coalition in August 2022, accusing the BJP of attempting to split the JD(U). In 2000, he became CM for the first time after campaigning against RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav's 'Jungle Raaj.' He has served as Bihar's CM on eight occasions. In 2013, Nitish left the NDA after a 17-year alliance due to disagreements over Narendra Modi's selection as the BJP's prime ministerial candidate. He returned as chief minister in 2015 after forging a grand alliance with the RJD and Congress but walked out of it in 2017, citing corruption accusations against the RJD. In 2022, he severed ties with the BJP once again, alleging conspiracy and attempts to influence JD-U MLAs to rebel against him.
