These Instagram-Inspired Drinks Are Keeping Us Caffeinated - Sunset Magazine

Social media ASMR (that tingly feeling you get from watching or hearing something satisfying) comes to me in many forms; sometimes it’s watching eclairs get dipped in chocolate on Tastemade France’s Instagram feed, or calm app ads of sand being raked, whatever it is, I am grateful for any and all moments that encourage me to take a deep breath these days. This week, my social media solace has come in the form of watching coffee and tea-based drinks carefully being poured over perfect cubes of ice into vintage glasses.

With houses as in life, sometimes we need to go back to go forward. When Karlyn Neel was vacationing in Palm Springs one February weekend, a real estate email showed up in her inbox advertising a perfectly restored mid-century modern house in Indian Wells: All low-slung glazing, with a reflecting pond in the entry and views of the Santa Rosa mountains—it was the sort of blast from the past that makes you dream of your future.

Dutch Oven Recipes to Get You Through The Week - Sunset Magazine

In the last week, I’ve probably dirtied up my dutch oven over ten times. From bakes to sauces to braising short ribs, my forest green Le Creuset gets used and abused on the daily—but after a quick soak, the meals of the past wipe away with ease. The dutch oven is a kitchen essential that I think gets put on the back burner all too often (see what I did there). It can be used for anything, though many people steer away from lugging the heavy dish out of cabinets onto the stove. I keep mine clean and on the front burner, ready for action at any time. Investing in a good dutch oven is like finding a nice vase or the perfect centerpiece for a table, it can sit on the stove whether or not it’s being used, and adds a unique pop of color to any kitchen.

Ed Note: If you’ve built a raised bed before, you know how vital they can be to a high-functioning garden. If you already have the materials handy, we’ve got the ultimate guide to building a conventional raised bed right here. With all this time on your hands, you might even be looking to raise your game with something like this next-level raised bed. But right now, you might be making different choices about when to leave the house, and whether to put yourself and others in harm’s way for non-essential products. That’s why we’ve asked author Christy Wilhelmi to help explain the Berm Bed, the no-nonsense, no-materials way to achieve a similar effect.

Test the viability of vegetable seeds left over from last year by putting a few on a damp paper towel. Fold the towel over the seeds and place in a resealable plastic bag, marking the bag with the name of the vegetable. Store at room temperature and check in a week to see if the seeds have germinated. If not, it’s time to order replacement seed.

Most gardeners cede the colder seasons to the whims of winter. Coaxing hearty crops out of the cold earth can prove complicated, and low-yield. Fortunately, there are more companies than ever making products that can keep you in homegrown fresh vegetables year-round. This year I decided to try my hand at small-scale gardening on my balcony with a Farmstand system from Lettuce Grow, which launched in late 2019 and counts Zooey Deschanel among its founders. The company offers a compelling promise: They ship you the starters, and within weeks you’ll have a veritable bounty of herbs and veggies to enjoy. I’ll have to admit I was skeptical when the undulating plastic base and skull-like extensions showed up. Each level includes six circular holes, into which you’ll place your seedlings. But naked of plants, and stacked atop the rounded pyramidal base, the construction resembles a pile of Jack Skellington heads, or some kind of ancient graveyard marker.

Wildlands is your source for the world of travel, outdoor adventure, conservation, and the stories of those who live wild lives.
The creators of The Vanlife App, a one-stop shop for van conversion enthusiasts to connect, pick out safe camping locations, and share resources, have announced the addition of a feature they’re touting as the “Airbnb of camping.”
Called Camp Share, the feature enables land and homeowners to make anything from privately owned lots and yards to driveways or even glamping set-ups available for camping reservations, thus eliminating the angst that can so often accompany the search for a reliable boondocking location.
