Today. good to see you. let me ask you what we were talking about with congresswoman bass. did you feel that the president s speech last night answered important questions for instance, about how do we get out of libya. i don t think that he answered how we get out of libya. i think that he made a very powerful case for why he felt compelled to take a when he labeled a humanitarian action. but we have to be a little bit more candid here, to say it s a humanitarian to prevent the massacre of thousands of people, that s one thing and one noble goal. but now we re involved, not only on no-fly zone, but a no-drive zone. we re attacking armed personnel carriers, tanks. you mentioned three explosions that has just taken place tripoli. so we are clearly on the side of the rebels advancing. and the question that will come up is, what if they are forestalled? what if gadhafi s forces resist? do we then continue to take the side of the rebels who are pushing forward? they apparently do n ....
Policy is to see gadhafi removed, that might create problems in the u.n. with the u.n. resolution which is only to have a no-fly zone or much broader, to protect the people against gadhafi s forces. but secondly, if he were to say that, we also have the arab league that has already shown buyer s remorse and they would say wait a minute, we signed on for the no-fly zone. we didn t realize it was a no-drive zone. we didn t realize that you were going to shift the balance of power to those who were resisting. and though it has been declared or suggested from the white house that this is no precedent, i think we have to ask two questions. what is the policy of the united states, what s it going to be going forward? for example, is it our policy that whenever an awe authoriuth january regime uses force in its country that we will be prepared to use military force to prevent that? if that s the case, then we have other countries we have to look at very carefully. secondly, is it a precedent? ....
On the other hand, you talk to libyans and they desperately want u.s. involvement. maybe not troops on the ground. you know, i don t think we should send troops on the ground and many libyans would not want that either. but the kind of intervention that has happened so far in terms of no-flight zone, no-drive zone, air strikes. that is something that seems to have overwhelming support from libyans themselves. and that s a huge difference from iraq. now, you know, i ve been talking about this throughout this show. it seems that people cannot get it through their thick heads that maybe the extreme answer isn t the right answer in every case. whether we either do absolutely nothing or we send in every troop we ve got in a ground invasion. we do air cover and see if gadhafi gets toppled. but i want to ask you an interesting question. if gadhafi doesn t get toppled, is it still a victory because we stopped the massacres? oh, absolutely. ....
