Capital Transit Unveils Alaska's First Battery-Electric Bus

April 13, 2021
Capital Transit has added a battery-electric bus to its fleet. This is the first electric bus owned and operated by a public transit agency in Alaska.
“The City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ) is committed to bringing clean public transportation to its ridership and the community,” says Katie Koester, public works and engineering director of CBJ. “Capital Transit drivers and mechanics have been retraining to operate and maintain the new 40-foot long bus and to learn the nuances of its integrated battery management system. We have eliminated oil changes.”
Capital Transit recently unveiled the bus, manufactured in California by Proterra. Juneau Mayor Beth Weldon hosted a dedication ceremony with guests that included Gov. Mike Dunleavy, State Sen. Jesse Kiehl and John MacKinnon, commissioner of the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF).

Port Authority of Allegheny County adds 6 more battery-electric Xcelsior CHARGE buses from New Flyer

Port Authority of Allegheny County adds 6 more battery-electric Xcelsior CHARGE buses from New Flyer
The Port Authority of Allegheny County (PAAC), headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania has converted options to order six more forty-foot battery-electric Xcelsior CHARGE heavy-duty transit buses from New Flyer.
The purchase, supported by Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Low or No Emission (Low-No) Grant Program funds, will replace end-of-life diesel vehicles with efficient, sustainable battery-electric buses. In 2019, PAAC ordered its first two New Flyer electric buses, with the contract including options to buy eight more buses over the next five years.
The additional six will bring PAAC’s zero-emission fleet to eight Xcelsior CHARGE buses.

Atlanta’s MARTA orders 6 Xcelsior CHARGE 40-foot electric buses from New Flyer
Order marks MARTA’s first electric bus purchase from New Flyer, joins over 40 North American agencies with active zero-emission bus programs supported by New Flyer
New Flyer of America Inc. announced that the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) has awarded New Flyer with a new order for six Xcelsior CHARGE zero-emission, battery-electric forty-foot heavy-duty transit buses. MARTA is among the largest transit systems in the US, providing public transit to the Atlanta metropolitan region and delivering 116 million passenger trips per year.
The purchase is supported by federal funding from the Federal Transit Administration’s (FTA) Low or No Emission (Low-No) Grant Program. MARTA has been transitioning to lower-emission propulsion since 1996, when the agency first introduced compressed natural gas (CNG) buses from New Flyer.
