COVID-19 Recovery in Latin America and the Caribbean: A Partnership Strategy for the Biden Administration In-Depth Research & Reports by Jason Marczak and Cristina Guevara Foreword From Mexico City to Manaus, the COVID-19 pandemic has ravaged communities throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. In March 2020, families in Guayaquil searched for coffins to bury their loved ones. In April and May, Venezuelans who had fled the Maduro dictatorship were forced to return home after having lost their jobs in neighboring countries. As someone who has spent fifteen years in Congress advocating for the United States to work more closely with our friends in Latin America and the Caribbean, I was deeply saddened as this region became an epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a global spike in remote work. However, most people have a ‘home base’ such as a house or apartment, where they spend most of their time. These remote workers may travel and work from a different location for a few days or weeks, but then return to their home base. Digital nomads are different; they are a cross between the long-term expat and the two-week vacationer. The Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA) has released a new research report to share findings about who these digital nomads are and what they are looking for when they travel.
With remote working now a way of life for laptop-centric professionals the world-over, working from home in 2020 will give way to 'working-from-anywhere' in 2021 and beyond. Living an untethered existence that doesn’t rely on having to show up for work at an office (or even being in a specific city) means 'digital nomads' can move around and conduct their business from anywhere with wifi. Coupled with this has been a devastating drop-off in tourism, which means many countries around the world (particularly paradise destinations economically reliant on visitors) are doing everything they can to entice people from overseas. We've looked at seven locations that have recently launched dedicated visas for digital nomads.
