And if anybody said that they were doing something wrong, it would be pretty detrimental to trystan. i talked to trystan when they got home from school and when i explained to them the situation, i was met with absolute trauma and heartbreak. and it wasn t because they were being told they had to do something they didn t want to, it was because trystan is able to present female inconspicuously with long hair. trystan s long hair is deeply seeded in their gender identity. and once i saw that response and i saw the trauma that was in their eyes, i realized, we weren t going to be cutting trystan s hair. and that we needed to go and do what we needed to do. i let the principal know. i explained to her that trystan was nonbinary and would not be able to conform to a boy/girls dress code because trystan does not identify as a boy or a girl. trystan identifies as nonbinary. from that point, they continued ....

To misgender my child and put trystan in iss for nine days. it was at that point that i retained a lawyer and reached out to the aclu and from day one, i ve been fighting. and so have many other parents across the district, have been fighting this antiquated, sexist, and archaic dress code. let me ask you, what did the principal say you when you said trystan identified as nonbinary, despite the fact that the school was insisting to identify trystan as a male? she didn t know what it was. and i understand that. so i tried to explain it. and i tried to reach out to her with compassion and love and try to turn it on to her. i said, what if you had a child that was nonbinary. what would be the decision that you would make? and she said, i would cut his hair and hung up on me. and i just realized that the school is not inclusive. the school is not educated in lgbtq community and we were just going to have to educate and ....
