A director with the Government of Nunavut warned his department that a plan for a new fuel tank farm in Arviat likely wouldn’t be approved elsewhere in the developed world and claimed the project was pushed for political reasons, according to emails obtained by CBC.
After years of work, the plans for Arviat's new fuel tank farm are being sent back to the Government of Nunavut to start from scratch. The community's hamlet council was met with opposition from residents on the proposed site of the tank farm and after much back and forth, the project came to a halt.
People in Arviat are asking their hamlet council to reconsider the site of where a new fuel tank farm is set to be built in the community. The proposed location is on the shoreline, near important harvesting areas and close to people's homes.
