Lear's television journey commenced in the 1950s when he began selling jokes to comedians such as Jerry Lewis. Transitioning from film where he served as a screenwriter and director, Lear, then approaching his 50s, experienced unforeseen success by convincing CBS to take a chance on his sitcom "All in the Family" in 1971.
