Gainesville nurse Kristin Kay slowly improves in ICU after COVID-19

It is now Day 53 on life support for Kristin Kay, a beloved nurse and mother in Gainesville who contracted COVID-19 and has been fighting to survive in a hospital since December.
A ventilator and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation or ECMO machine still breathe for her at North Florida Regional Medical Center. Two infections test her healing lungs. She can t talk or laugh or even smile. But she is improving, said Steven Kay, her husband.
Kristin can lightly squeeze his hand on command. Sometimes she opens her eyes when he plays her videos of their 5-year-old son, Parker, or their wedding dance. Once, when he showed her a memory on his phone of country musician Garth Brooks singing I Won t Back Down by Tom Petty in the Ben Hill Griffin Stadium from a concert they attended together in 2019, she raised and lowered her right arm. ....

Marilee Griffin walked into the Martin Luther King Jr. Multipurpose Center on Oct. 5, 2019, sat on the creaky, dark blue bleachers and buckled her shiny, dark red skateboard helmet.
The helmet matches everything about Griffin especially her retro red lipstick and fiery-colored hair.
She then strapped on her black-and-red-outlined knee pads and wrist guards. She slid on her rose-colored knee-high socks and her quad black skates with red laces.
On the track, she’s night and day from the nine other skaters zipping around the 88-foot, oval-shaped roller derby. Mostly because she pairs her red accessories with her grass-colored Swamp City Sirens jersey. ....

As COVID-19 vaccinations through the Alachua County office of the Florida Department of Heath and local hospitals continue, the rollout for seniors and others in the general population is broadening.
Local health care leaders say COVID-19 vaccine supplies are “getting tight,” but Alachua County is making good progress distributing its supplies. While winter weather has delayed some shipments of the vaccine, they re still coming.
As of March 22, more than 65,000 people here had received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, and more than 46,000 of them had completed the series with their second dose. ....
