Station most of the morning. how are locals reacting to this devastating attack yesterday? reporter: yeah, we were at the train station here in lviv earlier, and i got to tell you all throughout this conflict, the railway lines have been an absolute lifeline for the ukrainian people. the trains have kept running even as the bombs were falling. dozens of railway workers have been killed. part of what makes yesterday s attack so shocking is that those people at the railway station were on their way to safety, they were leaving what was supposed to be the war zone and heading to relatively safe places like here in lviv. there were three trains supposed to come yesterday here to lviv. they didn t show up. they didn t show up again today, that s according to a local volunteer. and i asked that volunteer how people are feeling getting on the trains today knowing that the russians are capable of attacking railway stations. take a listen. are people worried about getting ....
Conflict around the world. you know, there are other places where they ve had this perpetual conflict. i want to bring up the u.n. fact. you know, we saw this russia was suspended from the human rights council, but i have to say, you re uniquely positioned to speak to this, the u.n. seems like a flawed body to me. this suspension seems more symbolic than having an actual impact on this war. what am i missing here? when we look at it, those elected in recent years defended human rights not only include russia, china, cuba, saudi arabia, venezuela, and others. so what are we missing with this symbolic move? you re not missing anything, tiffany. that is ultimately the challenge that we have with the united nations right now. and i served there. i was a spokesperson at the united nations. i sat there in 2014 watching the u.n. security council as it tried to push back on putin taking over crimea, another part of ukraine. so the idea that even this invasion of ukraine is new is simply not ....
Allegations that russia is responsible are a provocation. all of this follows the atrocities exposed last week in the town of bucha where mass graves showed people bound and shot in the back of the head were uncovered. the west imposed sanctions on russia, and the u.n. has removed russia from the human rights counsel. it doesn t seem to be enough. joining me now is nbc news correspondent, ralph sanchez. i know you re in lviv talking to people, what are officials like president zelenskyy saying about this missile hit. tiffany, there is real horror here, of all the attacks we ve seen over the course of these 45 days of war, what happened yesterday is one of the worst in terms of deaths or possibly only behind that strike on a theater in mariupol where civilians were shelters. president zelenskyy is calling for what he calls a firm global response to this attack. and in a statement, he called for an international war crimes ....

Bucha massacre and said she would do what she could to speed up ukraine s membership of the european union which would be huge for this country. it looks very unlikely they re going to join nato, but if they could join the eu, that would be enormous. tiffany, what s interesting is for such a senior european official to feel it was safe enough to come to kyiv, the russian forces have withdrawn, and meet face to fate with zelenskyy, begs the question might we see american officials coming to the ukrainian capital to meet the ukrainian president face to face. seems very unlikely president biden would travel to the middle of a war zone, but is it possible we could see secretary of state antony blinken, other senior u.s. officials, coming here to make a symbolic high-profile visit of solidarity with the ukrainian people. tiffany? absolutely or vice president harris herself. we ll certainly keep our eye on that. thank you so much, raf sanchez. stay safe. we ll check back in later in the sh ....
