TsukuBlog | A Different Way of Encountering Japan`s Most Elegant of Everyday Birds- the SHIRASAGI (白鷺)- Egret

The egret rookery along the Sakuragawa River on the Tsuchiura-Tsukuba Border – May

By Avi Landau
One of my favorite everyday experiences in Tsukuba is catching sight of one or more of this area`s numerous egrets ( SAGI in Japanese)- long-legged and long necked white-plumed wading birds, either stalking their prey in the rice fields or streams or flying elegantly overhead, with their necks tucked in and their long legs trailing behind while their slender wings gracefully propel them across the sky.  It is  something that I never tire of, no matter how often I see it.

20 August, 2020

A 9th century funerary urn unearthed near the shores of Lake Kasumigaura. During the previous centuries, in the very same area, men of importance had been buried in large tumuli filled with symbols of the deceased`s status and surrounded by  a lively cast of animal and human shaped figurines– with the spread of Buddhism, local elites eventually came to have themselves cremated after death and their bones and ashes buried in simple urns ....

Japanese Christmas- A Look at the History of Japan`s Celebration of Western Culture- KURISUMASU (yet again)

Giant roof-top Santas in Tsukuba. Like almost all Christmas decorations in Japan, these will come down right after December 25th unlike those in Europe and the U.S. which remain in place through early to mid- January
In this season if you want to take a Sugue-riding lesson at Tsukuba Center, you`ll be asked to dress as Santa while the instructor is in a Christmas tree suit! You`ll also notice how just about all cashiers, shop-staff , waiters and waitresses don Santa caps – right through to Dec. 26 when they`ll disappear till next year. ....
