He was a 1943 graduate of the former William Penn High School. He was a graduate of Gettysburg College and a 1955 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary School. Fager served as a radio-gunner on a B-17 during World War II in Italy. He received the Air Metal and two Oak Leaf Clusters; the EAME Theater Ribbon, four Bronze Stars and the Distinguished Unit Citation Badge. Kenneth “Rock” Merritt jumped into World War II conflicts and retired as the 18th Airborne Corps' top enlisted senior adviser, Merritt’s presence was still known around Fort Bragg.
