crews are as surprised as anyone. weijia jiang has more on the just-released 911 tapes. weijia? mary, it s not just rescue crews. but after seeing this crash unfold and then watching the pilot walk away uninjured, many people are now calling this the miracle on the south river. what s your emergency? i m calling in a plane down in the south river. reporter: many who witnessed the small-engine plane plunge into the south river, flooded 911 call lines, desperate for help. an airplane just crashed. he just went right behind the house. i don t know if he s in the water or if he hit the mountains. i m on the other side of these trees. i can t see exactly where the guy went in. okay. but you know for sure he went down? the plane has not come back up. once it hits the water, within about a minute later, we saw a body come up. waving his hand. reporter: police say the pilot is 76-year-old richard dryer of annapolis. though 70 sept res rescue workers packed onto the scene, it was two civilians who rescued him. we saw the guy s head come up. when we got closer, we knew it was him. he knew what he was doing. he got the plane down safely. the crash happened just a mile away from lee airport, where dryer was trying to land. in the past three years, three other pilots trying to do exactly the same thing lost their lives. exactly why this guy was so lucky. surprising was not the word. unbelievable was the word. when i saw whoo i saw, i couldn t believe the pilot had ejected and gotten out of that plane. reporter: debbie calls dryer the only person on board a seasoned flyer, and apparently tough on the ground, too. after the crash, he refused any medical treatment. reporter: and federal investigators say there was a small mechanical error in the plane that dryer was able to quickly fix and then land. and they say a full accident investigation was simply not necessary. report being live in edgewater, weijia jiang, wjz eyewitness news. all right, weijia, thank you. melt pel multiple agencies assisted including the police and fire department. one man is dead. firefighters arrived at the home on old battle grove road this afternoon. one person inside the home was pronounced dead. the flames were contained to the living room. there is no word on a cause. an extensive cleanup tonight after a train derails in baltimore county. sky eye chopper 13 is over the scene of the accident in patapsco state park. you can see, workers are trying to remove the derailed cars from the tracks right now. alex demetrick has more on what we know about the accident. reporter: the csx freight train derailed at 11:00 this morning. seven cars left the tracks, from a train 60 cars long. they were carrying a cargo of scrap aluminum and plastic beads. the accident brought a big response because it happened right at the howard county- baltimore county line. firefighters quickly determined the train s two-man crew was uninjured. and that the tanker cars carrying hazardous chemicals were not damaged and could be moved away from the scene. reporter: what caused this train to retail derail is not yet known. reporter: one possibility may be tied to this past winter s heavy snows. ground is still super saturated from the melt. and recent rains may have played a part in weakebbing the weakening the rail bed. that is still speculation at this point. it is estimated it will take eight hours to right the derailed cars. there is no estimate on how long it will take to repair damage to the rails. alex demetrick, wjz eyewitness news. now, according to csx, the train was traveling eastbound through maryland with a final destination in philadelphia. sky eye chopper 13 is over the scene of the accident. right now, captain mike perry has more on the cleanup that he sees happening. mike? reporter: hello, denise. as you can see, csx employees are on the scene here. they brought in several pieces of heavy equipment, some cranes. and they began working on the lead derailed car. it appears to be a larger boxcar. they have started to try to get it back on the tracks again. as you can see, there are several other open rail cars here, carrying aluminum and several carrying plastic beads that must be uprighted before they can be retailed. the operation here is likely to continue well into the weekend because there are at least eight cars here. they re severely derailed. and then there are at least 48 more cars behind it that appear to be kind of just momentarily stranded behind this derailed train. the front part of the train has left the scene. so right now, all we have is the csx workers that are on the scene here at patapsco state park. back to you on tv hill. thank you very much, captain mike perry. in sky eye chopper 13. a towson university student is in custody tonight. police say he is responsible for a violent armed robbery at a campus dorm. the robbery happened monday at 3:30 in the after. police say jerry young was one of two armed men who forced their way in and hit a student. young is charged with two counts of armed robbery, two counts of first-degree assault and two counts of first-degree burglary. a $20 million laundering business is shut down. wjz is live in northwest baltimore. mike schuh has more on the crackdown that could be more than a widespread shoplifting ring. reporter: this is one of the pawn shops shops and buy- and-sell shops that have their assets forfeited all as part of an alleged $20 million theft scheme. reporter: eyewitness news is there when city officers raid one of over 30 pawn shops and buy-and-sell businesses in this city and county. the federal prosecutor alleges the 15 people arrested were part of a $20 million scam. a massive criminal operation that was preying on businesses and consumers in baltimore county. reporter: sources say the items stolen were toiletries. some shoplifted. some stolen from delivery trucks. no matter how they were taken, they were funneled through these shops. this investigation was important and very critical because it brought to closure a major organized retail theft ring. reporter: sources also say that some of the items were resold the inter resold on the internet. the money on 57 bank accounts were taken by the u.s. government as a result of this federal seizure warrant. reporter: the county talked about this case today only to highlight the good work done by the county police officers who originated the case with a single theft arrest. however, when pressed with even basic details about what happened, they quickly became testy, saying that more arrests are expected. reporting live along reisterstown road, mike schuh, wjz eyewitness news. back to you on tv hill. all right, mike. thanks. it involves a lot of money. politicians today used these bursts to ask lawmakers not to weaken scrap metal. the weekend is off to a chilly start. dry, cooler night across most of maryland. what can we expect? the weekend. bob turk and meteorologist tim williams have your updated weather. a little rain and snow this morning. but not a whole lot. still rain extremely south of our region, way down across the southern bay. still have some rain. it s moving slowly out to the east and southeast. later tonight, you ll clear out. and we re told a few clouds across much of northern maryland. tonight, it will clear out. it is going to be chilly. yes, it is. tim has a look at how cool we expect tomorrow morning to be. despite the fact that it will be sunny. i know how cold i m expecting this evening to be. starting to drop out here. winds are starting to pick up here. we ve had windy conditions all day long. but with the skies clearing, any heat we had is rising. with high pressure building in new england. and down across, we ll say, southeastern canada, over toward the canadian maritime. we re seeing high pressure built in there and cold air wrapped around it. we re going to see temperatures drop down into the 20s tonight. the last hurrah for winter furnaces and coats. bob will have your complete updated first warning forecast and talk about when a warmup is under way. back inside. word of a special mem memorriality for a salisbury girl memorial for a salisbury girl who was assaulted and abducted. salisbury is planning a scholarship in memory of sarah foxwell. police found the 11-year-old s body in a wooded area on christmas day, just days after she was abducted from her home on the eastern shore. they say it will go to a student studying social study work at the university. meanwhile, police charged thomas leggs, jr. leggs four-day trial is set to begin may 24th. gigi, thank you. live in the newsroom for us. the next sarah foxwell scholarship will be given next fall. restructuring is set to cost 300 people their jobs here in maryland. it will shut down and 320 employees will be laid off. governor o malley released the statement on the closure today. he says state agencies will work closely with local officials and arrangements from bp solar to make sure impacted workers have the help they need. former mayor sheila dixon was back at work in the private sector. dixon is helping the maryland minority contractors association with marketing and is working out a permanent role. dixon would be in charge of bringing in new members. dixon resigned last month, as part of a deal with prosecutors, following her conviction on embezzlement. still ahead. nba star gilbert arenas learns his sentence for bringing guns to the locker room. help for homeowners. one baltimore elementary school is promise said a brand- new, free library. and the kids get to help design it. i m andrea fujii. that story is coming up on wjz eyewitness news. and a gray, chilly start to the weekend. the updated first warning weather forecast with bob is coming up. ,,,, the obama administration is announcing a new plan to help homeowners who are struggling to pay their mortgages. karen brown reports for wjz on how it works. danel and diane spadey are trying to hang onto their new home, for their two children and brand new grandson. this is cory. he s the next generation. reporter: like millions of americans, canel lost a good- paying job. diane has a new one. but it s not enough to make their mortgage payments. even though i lost a job and found another job, it s still like $20,000 less than i was making before. reporter: they have been drowning in paperwork. i have a folder. i have memos from a mortgage company. reporter: as they try to get mortgage lenders to help modify their mortgage. if there are programs out there to help people, where are they? welcome to progressive.com. come on in, and i ll give you a free quote. quote and compare in about 8 minutes. now, that s progressive. call or click today. it is 5:27. 49 degrees with clouds still around. good evening, everybody. here are some of the stories people are talking about tonight. an annapolis student is in a fight for his life, after collapsing on a basketball court at a friend s party. as gigi barnett explains, the teen had just received a large scholarship from a local university. an-year-old jeremy blackstone was set to begin school in the fall. today, friends are sending jeremy get well messages. this after the teen suddenly collapsed during a pickup basketball game during a friend s birthday party, sunday afternoon. jeremy is still in really critical condition. he was just a really nice guy. it s really sad, yeah. reporter: doctors believe jeremy may have suffered a heart attack on the basketball court. but his family said jeremy seemed to be healthy. he has asthma. but he s a pretty good athlete. hasn t had any major problems. first time in the hospital, i believe, in his whole life. reporter: jeremy is a straight-a student and a student athlete there. he was a well-liked student. so we do have our counselors, our school psychologists that are there are there for all of the kid fist they just want to talk. reporter: some of jeremy s friends performed cpr on him right away. doctors say their actions helped tremendously. hopefully he will get a chance soon. jeremy is in critical condition at baltimore washington medical center. should the public know about toyota s problems along before long before their recalls. a strongly-worded warning. the notices centered on floor mats and were filed with the national highway traffic safety administration. they issued a message to toyota owners to check their floor mats but never mentioned the risk of crashes. late this afternoon, suspended nba star gilbert arenas learned he will not be spending any time in prison. the wizards guard was surrounded. he was ordered to spend 30 days in a halfway house for pleading guilty to weapons charges. he brought four guns to the team locker room in september. his lawyers called it a misguided prank. prosecutors wanted a three- month jail term. the 2008 republican presidential ticket holds a reunion on the campaign trail. sarah palin is in arizona to help john mccain in his senate race. they have scheduled a rally. and also an event in phoenix. mccain is facing a strong challenge in the upcoming primary, as he bids for his fifth term in the u.s. senate. new research on why some children become bullies. studies found they are actually seeking the attention of fellow classmates. they also choose their victims wisely, tending to pick less popular students. the research also showed bullies tend to have more substance abuse problems and higher levels of dlirchtion delinquency. and a new study shows shows that women past menopause should take aspirin. it contributed to a lower risk of breast or ovarian cancer. studies looked at 800 women who regularly used aspirin or other pain medications. scientists used to think women with breast cancer should avoid having children because of risk that the cancer could return. but now they are looking at it in an entirely new light. reporter: 15 months ago, erin ralmido gave birth to her daughter madeleine. definitely the best moment of my life. reporter: but the best moment of her life came months after one of her worst. while she was pregnant, she was dielingsed diagnosed with cancer. well, it was really scary, as it would be for anyone. reporter: and today, mom and baby are doing fine. ralmido wants to have more more children. but in the past, was told she shouldn t. reporter: it was always believed that having a baby after breast cancer is a bad idea. doctors thought the hormones might cause the cancer to return. reporter: but new research finds that is not the case. researchers followed 30,000 breast cancer survivors. and found those who became pregnant had a 42% lower risk of dying. it is no longer thought that a preg neansz spew pregnancy spews the prest cancer breast cancer to return. they believe it is safe. there is absolutely no reason why young women who want to get pregnant shouldn t get pregnant. reporter: that s great news to ralmido. know, just being told you might not be able to have more, i want like three or four. football player has rocked the campus of florida international university. 22-year-old kendall berry was stabbed to death last night in front of the school s recreation center. one person has been arrested. the search is on for other suspects tonight. earlier reports suggest the encounter may have been over a girl. berry led the team in touchdowns last year. 11 people, including an infant were killed in a fiery crash in central kentucky earlier today. a driver fell asleep behind the wheel of a semi tractor-trailer this morning. he crashed into a passenger van before hitting a rock wall. the truck burst into flames. nine adults and a baby also died at the scene. southern california, a motorist was killed on a major interstate road. police closed down all southbound lanes near the crash site, backing up the traffic for miles during morning rush hour. the cause of the collision remains under investigation. after nearly six months, florida authorities have charged a man in the death of a 4-year-old girl. authorities say summer thompson was lured into a home and sexually assaulted while walking home from school. her body was found in a georgia landfill. harrell is already in jail on pornography charges. two ships from the united states and norway will be searching the waters off brazil s northeastern coast. they will spend one month sweeping the sea bed, using underwater drones and robots. after months of studies, the search area was narrowed to 770 square miles. the results of iraq s march 7th election is final. and it is a setback for the current prime mib ster. minister. supporters of neury allah ma nouri al-maliki. he has vowed to challenge results. president obama and president of russia agree to a new nuclear arms treaty. joel brown reports for wjz, the agreement makes substantial cuts in the number of warheads on each side. reporter: president obama walked into the briefing room this morning to announce the good news. a new nuclear weapons treaty with russia. the united states and russia have agreed to the most comprehensive arms control agreement in nearly two decades. reporter: officials say the agreement came together after he called has counter part, demetri medvedev. they are expected to leave the country with about 1500 long- range nuclear warheads. and half the other arms that could be used to launch a nuclear attack. reporter: once both sign the treaty, then they will face a new challenge. the president has already met with top lawmakers here at the white house, hoping to pave the way for congressional approval. reporter: the negotiations came to an end last spring. there were disagreements over how which side would verify that the other kept up its end of the bargain. analysts say this treaty s significance goes beyond nuclear weapons, showing that president obama s efforts to strengthen relationships with russia is moving forward. the treaty is slated to be signed, april 8th, ahead of next month s international summit on
