Bond and Hirini named New Zealand flagbearers for Tokyo 2020 Monday, 28 June 2021
Women’s rugby sevens captain Sarah Hirini and two-time Olympic rowing gold medallist Hamish Bond have been announced as New Zealand’s flagbearers for the Tokyo 2020 Opening Ceremony.
The joint flagbearer announcement follows the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) confirmation that nations could select a male and female athlete together.
Both athletes will fly the flag at the Opening Ceremony on July 23.
Hirini and Bond were confirmed at the flagbearers by New Zealand’s
Chef de Mission Rob Waddell at a team function in Auckland. Sarah and Hamish are outstanding athletes and are also leaders off the field of play, said Waddell.

Azerbaijan Minister of Youth and Sport Azad Rahimov dies of cancer at age of 56 Friday, 30 April 2021
Azerbaijan’s Minister of Youth and Sport Azad Rahimov, a key figure in the launching of the first European Games in Baku in 2015, has died at the age of 56, it was announced tonight.
He died in New York where he had been receiving treatment for lung cancer.
Rahimov was also the vice-chairman of the National Olympic Committee of the Azerbaijani Republic.
The languages graduate had been appointed as Azerbaijan’s Minister of Youth and Sport in 2006 but came to international prominence in 2012 when Baku was awarded the inaugural European Games.
