Trudeau dismisses Ontario's call for stricter land border quarantine rules – RCI

Last Updated: Friday, April 30, 2021 17:23
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says his government is open to stricter penalties for travellers who violate the mandatory quarantine period but will not introduce stricter quarantine measures for people crossing the U.S.-Canada land border as demanded by Ontario.
“We’re always looking at doing more enforcement, at stepping up on the penalties on that, and we’ll continue to work with the provinces on that,” Trudeau told reporters during a briefing in Ottawa on Friday.
“We know that importation through the borders is extremely low in terms of [COVID-19] cases in the country.”
But the federal government will acquiesce to Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s demand to temporarily suspend the arrival of international students from overseas, Trudeau said.

COVID-19 Live Updates: News on coronavirus in Calgary for April 30

What’s happening now
Alberta hit an all-time peak for intensive-care unit admissions and reported 2,007 new COVID-19 cases Friday, its second-highest total ever, trailing only the 2,048 infections tallied Thursday.
Patients with greater chances of surviving beyond the next year should be prioritized if Alberta’s health-care system is overwhelmed by the COVID-19 pandemic, new documents released by Alberta Health Services Friday reveal.
Hundreds of Calgarians who received parking tickets while getting COVID-19 shots in the city’s downtown won’t feel their sting.
Nearly 300 workers at the Cargill meat-packing plant in High River shuffled through the onsite vaccination clinic Thursday morning, receiving their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine.

Ontario marked a grim COVID-19 milestone Thursday as its virus-related death toll passed 8,000 and provincial health leaders sped up plans that could get more Canadians vaccinated in the coming months.
“The way out of the pandemic is vaccines, and the light at the end of the tunnel grows brighter every day,” said Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott.
Ontario is forecasting everyone over the age of 18 will be able to book a shot by May 24.
The province planned to lower the age eligibility for mass vaccination clinics to 55 and older starting Friday.

If the smash hit Broadway musical Come From Away has taught me anything, it s that the people of Newfoundland and Labrador are really helpful a reputation that nine medical personnel are living up to and then some right now by travelling from their homes all the way to Ontario to battle COVID-19.
The health-care workers (who include Newfoundland Premier Andrew Furey s wife, Dr. Allison Furey) touched down at Toronto s Pearson International Airport Tuesday afternoon.
Update: The health care workers from Newfoundland and Labrador have touched down in Toronto, tweeted Prime Minister Justin Trudeau upon their arrival.  Once again, I d like to thank everyone involved for stepping up in this time of need.

Health Minister Christine Elliott said doctors will ensure that these are patients who can be properly cared for in another setting.
“This temporary emergency order will provide hospitals with the flexibility to transfer certain patients, those whose doctors have determined no longer require hospital care and could be better supported in a more appropriate setting, to a long-term care or retirement home,” Elliott said Wednesday.
