Okaloosa County public safety communications system upgrades are on way


“We all need to be able to talk to each other,” Aden said of local law enforcement members, firefighters, paramedics and other first responders.
The existing communications systems have been in place since 1995, Aden said. He then noted that the email, text and photo/video-taking capabilities of a modern cellphone far exceeds those of a cellphone from ’95 that couldn’t do much more than dial a number.
Because of coverage gaps in the existing systems, “I have had to lift my radio in the air just to get a call” in some parts of the county, such as in its far northern reaches, Aden said. ....

Okaloosa to issue up to $10 million in bonds for Destin High School


SHALIMAR  After being assured that Okaloosa County would not be at risk, the County Commission on Tuesday unanimously agreed to allow the county to serve as the “conduit” issuer of up to $10 million in bonds for the planned Destin High School.
According to Deputy County Administrator of Operations Craig Coffey, the educational facilities revenue bonds will be used by the nonprofit Destin High School Inc. to pay for the acquisition, construction, improvement, renovation, installation and/or equipping of three existing buildings and an auditorium at the Grace Lutheran Church property at 4325 Commons Drive W.
Those anticipated Destin High School facilities total about 28,000 square feet on about 5 acres, according to Coffey. ....
