Summer freedom camping to be banned in five Tutukaka Coast hotspots


Peak season summer freedom camping will be banned along Tutukaka Coast under a new bylaw of Whangārei District Council.

Freedom camping will be banned for almost two months annually at about five of the coast s dozen sites along one of the district s most demand-challenged coastal hotspots.
It will be restricted between 18 December and 8 February at Tutukaka coast s Kowharewa Bay, Wellingtons Bay (main reserve, Whangaumu Reserve), Matapouri (Wehiwehi Road carpark), Woolleys Bay (western carpark) and Sandy Bay (toilet block carpark/grass area).
The new rules are part of the district council s amended 2017 Camping in Public Places Bylaw, which was formally adopted at the council s first full meeting of the year today. The updated bylaw comes into effect on 1 October, in time for the coming peak summer season camping. ....

Some of New Zealand s most popular walking tracks have had a huge decline in visitor numbers.
Data from the Department of Conservation compared visitor numbers over September and October this year to the same time last year.
Milford Sound was down 72 per cent, Franz Josef Glacier down 66 per cent and Hooker Valley Track down 52 per cent. ....
