Liverpool had 'monstrous' bid rejected for first choice before signing Kabak

Date published: Wednesday 3rd February 2021 7:54 - Samuel Bannister
Liverpool made a “monstrous” bid for Juventus defender Merih Demiral on deadline day, reports in Italy claim.
After long-term injuries to all three of their main centre-back options – Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip – Liverpool needed to bring in reinforcements at the back.
The champions opted for Ben Davies from Preston and Ozan Kabak from Schalke. Davies signed a permanent contract,
The latter was the headline addition, as he has experience of top-flight football in Germany. At the age of 20, he is a particularly intriguing prospect.
It will cost Liverpool a further £18m to the £1m they have paid for his loan if they wish to sign him at the end of the season.

Klopp in exciting Kabak declaration; reveals ex-Prem boss' crucial role

Turkey international Kabak, meanwhile, has proved a mainstay in the Schalke team this season. As such, he has faced continued adversity with the club rock bottom of the Bundesliga.
Indeed, Schalke’s woes saw them sack ex-Huddersfield Town boss David Wagner earlier in the season. But amid his long-term friendship with Klopp, Wagner still proved crucial in helping his fellow German decide on Kabak.
“Yes, Dave was already very, very positive about him,” Klopp told
Liverpoolfc.com. “He came very young to Germany and everybody was clear he was a massive talent.
“He is only 20 now. He plays in his second club [in Germany]; he is at Schalke and unfortunately they are in a bad position in the moment.

Liverpool hopes dashed as bosses express concern over rash transfer call

According to
The Athletic, though, Reds bosses have concerns about the type of signing they would be forced to make.
On one hand, club chiefs have ruled out the idea of a ‘quick-fix’ to tie them over until the end of the season.
Players such as free agent Ezequiel Garay would fit into that category.
On the flipside, however, they do not want to be ‘financially irresponsible’ by paying large sums for a signing.
Indeed, the source references Schalke’s
Ozan Kabak as one target who falls into that bracket.
The Reds opened talks with the 20-year-old’s representatives in November.

REDS COULD BRING KARIUS BACK
Liverpool could prematurely end Loris Karius’ loan spell at Union Berlin due to his lack of game time, according to a report.
The German stopper initially left Anfield in 2018 after his shocker in the Champions League final. From there, he signed up to a two-year loan at Besiktas.
However, his move to Turkey ended in disgrace over his wages, with Karius terminating the contract.
