Danish research institutions join leading European network of cultural heritage
Led by researchers from the University of Copenhagen, Danish research institutions and museums now join the European Research Infrastructure for Heritage Science (E-RIHS). This will increase European collaboration in Denmark within the field of study of our cultural and natural heritage.

The study of our cultural and natural heritage has seen quantum leaps in the last years because of new technologies and methods. However, international collaboration between heritage scientists is needed in order to heighten the quality of the research and maximize the output of the research facilities. ....

Combining Freeze Drying and High Pressure Homogenisation for Ultra-Fine Nanocrystal Production

Feb 15 2021 Read 275 Times
In recent years, nanomedicine has proven to be key in overcoming many of the challenges associated with poorly water-soluble drugs. Decreasing the size of drug particles can increase bioavailability and solubility, as a result of the increased API surface area.
Due to increased bioavailability, a lower amount of API is required, which in turn leads to a more cost-efficient product, with less risks and side effects for the patient [1].
High pressure homogenisation has long been the favoured method of particle size reduction and is often considered as a first-generation approach. Recently, second-generation approaches have been introduced and these involve a combination of technologies (SmartCrystal processes). One of which is known as the H96 process -the combination of freeze drying, followed by high pressure homogenisation. ....

Proper fit of face masks is more important than material, study suggests

Date Time
Proper fit of face masks is more important than material, study suggests
A team of researchers studying the effectiveness of different types of face masks has found that in order to provide the best protection against COVID-19, the fit of a mask is as important, or more important, than the material it is made of.
Fitting the face perfectly is a difficult technical challenge and small differences, such as a centimetre wider nose or slightly fuller cheeks, can make or break the fit of a mask
Eugenia O’Kelly
The researchers, from the University of Cambridge, carried out a series of different fit tests, and found that when a high-performance mask – such as an N95, KN95 or FFP2 mask – is not properly fitted, it performs no better than a cloth mask. Minor differences in facial features, such as the amount of fat under the skin, make significant differences in how well a mask fits. ....
