Nassau Announces Rent Relief Program For Struggling Tenants

Nassau County announced a new rent relief program to help those struggling to make payments due to the coronavirus pandemic. (Patch Graphic)
NASSAU COUNTY, NY Nassau County Executive Laura Curran announced a new program today that will give assistance to hundreds of people in the county struggling to pay their rent due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The program will use $6 million in federal Community Development Block Grants to give 900 renters up to $2,500 a month for three months to help them pay their rent if they ve been unable to make payments due to the coronavirus.
We all are reading about the new federal stimulus deal. I think it s a good start, said Curran. But as it relates to housing, there s a lot to sort out. We at the counties are closer to the ground, and we don t want to waste time getting help to the folks who need it. ....

LONG ISLAND, NY Long Island will likely see some nasty weather Christmas Eve into Christmas Day.
The National Weather Service has issued the following hazardous weather outlook:
A potent cold front may bring heavy rain and windy conditions from Thursday night into Friday morning. The combination of snow pack and heavy rain may bring flooding, with the highest potential across northeast New Jersey, the Lower Hudson Valley, and southern Connecticut. The highest winds will occur along coastal areas, such as Long Island, New York City, and coastal Connecticut. Strong to potentially damaging winds are possible. However, there is a fair amount of uncertainty in both rain amounts and how strong winds will be. ....

Senator Ed Gomes was a fighter for Bridgeport, for workers and for the State of Connecticut, Gov. Ned Lamont said in a statement. (Patch graphic)
BRIDGEPORT, CT Former state Sen. Edwin Gomes died Tuesday from injuries he sustained in a car crash Dec. 13, according to News 12 CT. He was 84.
In a statement, Connecticut Democrats called Gomes a true champion for the people of his district and all working families in CT. His legacy is one of compassion, wit and humor, and dedication to helping others through public service.
Gomes represented the 23rd District, which includes Bridgeport, from 2005 to 2013 and 2015 to 2019. ....

MILFORD, CT The Milford Police Department announced on social media that the owners of the Connecticut Post Mall, 1201 Boston Post Road, have implemented a parental escort policy for guests under the age of 18.
The policy goes into effect at 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 18 and continues through Jan. 3, 2021.
It is enforced Monday-Friday from 3 p.m. until close and on the weekends from 1 p.m. until close. ....

MILFORD, CT A Milford firefighter was injured while battling a blaze involving four tractor-trailers, a top fire official said.
At 2 p.m. Thursday, the Milford 911 Communications Center began receiving calls reporting a truck fire at the Pilot Travel Center on Old Gate Lane. While units were en-route to the scene, they could see the heavy black smoke coming from the area, officials said.
On arrival, Car 5 found two tractor-trailers engulfed in flames and two other trailers nearby. The diesel fuel in the trucks was also involved in the fire. ....
