The New Space Race: Europe's Competitive Advantage Is Wisdom

The New Space Race: Europe's Competitive Advantage Is Wisdom
The SpaceX crew about to liftoff, 23 April 2021. - SpaceX
With more and more state and private entities setting their sights on space, Europe will need to assert itself, but in a safe, responsible way.

PARIS — Space is the most beautiful place on Earth. That's what I realized when I came back from my space flight, on June 24, 1985. But unless we rethink the rules governing our starry sky, space could also present some very real dangers.
Never before has the adventure of space travel attracted so many players, from states to private companies. And no longer is there just one space-race, but many, and much of it driven by the private sector, a movement sometimes referred to as NewSpace. There's the lunar base, the conquest of Mars, new orbital stations, manned space flights and mega-constellations of satellites.

Welcome to Monday, where fresh clashes rock Jerusalem's mosque, death toll in Kabul school bombing tops 60, and Dracula sinks his fangs into COVID. We also look at the risks that go along with all the gung ho talk of the New Space Race.
• Clashes escalate in East Jerusalem: A new round of clashes have erupted between Palestinians and Israeli police outside al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem, leaving more than 200 injured, ahead of a planned Jewish nationalist march marking the capture of East Jerusalem.

French astronaut Thomas Pesquet blasts off, back to the ISS

3, 2, 1… Thomas Pesquet blasts off, back to the ISS
It's T-minus zero for French astronaut Thomas Pesquet. The 43-year-old space veteran lifts off on Friday, bound for the International Space Station (ISS) aboard SpaceX's Crew Dragon capsule. The six-month mission, named Alpha, is a historic first as Pesquet will become the first French commander of a space station.
Thomas Pesquet: "Practising our scales to work our way to the moon"
On Monday, four days before lifting off for the International Space Station, Thomas Pesquet spoke to FRANCE 24 and RFI from Cape Canaveral, Florida. The French astronaut will travel to the ISS alongside one Japanese and two American companions on the SpaceX Crew Dragon. Once he arrives on the station, Pesquet's daily routine should look a lot like his first mission in space in 2016 and 2017.

BORDEAUX, France (AFP) — Twelve bottles of Bordeaux wine and dozens of vine shoots are back at home in southwest France after spending months on the International Space Station (ISS) for an unusual astrochemistry experiment.
The red wine and 320 mature shoots known as canes arrived Monday after their return to Earth via a Dragon capsule operated by SpaceX, the private launching company created by Elon Musk.
They will be analyzed at the Institute of Vine and Wine Science in Bordeaux to see how the stresses produced by zero gravity affect both grape growth and the finished product, which could spur new agricultural research.
