More than six out of every 10 federal relief dollars built into the new state budget is earmarked for pensions.

Extra federal help for the jobless will end next month as Connecticut’s unemployment rate falls and the labor force rebuilds from the worst of the business lockdown caused by COVID-19.

Connecticut’s economy and labor force began to mend in 2021 as vaccines against COVID-19 became more plentiful, but variants of the lethal virus set back efforts to reopen offices that would otherwise have helped resuscitate downtown businesses.

Connecticut added 5,600 jobs in November, the state Department of Labor announced Thursday, locking in the state’s 11th consecutive month of job growth as Connecticut’s gradual bounceback from the COVID-19 pandemic continues. The state’s unemployment rate dropped from 6.4% in October to 6% in November, according to labor officials, and October’s jobs increase was revised up from 5,900 to 7,100.
